You can wait for the rpms to drop while idling

When you first start your car after a while it will idle pretty rough just below 1000 rpms and the shift knob shakes a lot.

after a couple minutes the tach will drop down to around 500 rpms and the shift knob doesnt vibrate much at all.

Temperature Guage Questions

Hi All,

After reading all the posts on this issue, I decided to share my experience. I have seen in the E60:530i that the white indicator lines on the rpm meter actually drop (the lines actually disappear) from about 6250 rpm to about 6750 rpm when the engine is warmed up. I was told by the BMW Service Manager that that will be the optimal temperature for the engine. He told me it is the same for the E90. But when I collected my E90:325i two weeks ago, the white indicator lines actually does not move (it remains the same whether the engine is warmed or cold). I have send him a mail regarding this issue and he has not replied me yet.

Another question I have is whether it is alright to warm up the engine in the morning before move off. I read in the manual that you do not have to do that. Will that caused any harm other than burning more fuel and causing pollution to the environment?

This thread has been quiet for a long time but I thought I'd add some more info unless it was done through another thread.

I can confirm the marks moves around the the tachy. My sales rep confirmed it as well. He's been driving one since May and says that if you look closely every time you start the engine you'll see the lines move. Even when it's hot it'll do it only a lot faster. When it's going to be colder the lines will move upward (towards 7000). Will confirm from my experience as soon as possible.

basically, the first post was right.

For the last question, that remained unanswered, it is alwasys better to drive the car than to leave "warm up". All it does is waste gas and the car actually takes longer to warm up. Drive slowly at first, don't rush the car be gentle and within a few miles you'll be fine (unless it's -35 Celsius outside like here sometimes).

I have never seen mine move. Ever. I've heard that they're supposed to, but like I said, never seen em do so.

I can't believe this thread can't rest in peace! I made a mistake of observation in starting it (as I acknowledged early in the thread), but every now and then someone makes the same mistake I made and says that the lines do move.

If a mod wants to delete a thread, you have my full support to delete this thread that I started

The moving lines are on the E60 only. On the E90 they are non functional. There are lotīs of endless threads about this on the german forums. The hardware might even be in place (moveable lines), but itīs not in the Software or not activated.

BMW recommends to drive the car right away after starting the engine and drive slowly for few minutes so that all parts are warmed up simultaneously, not only the engine itself like the old way we warmed up the car (engine on while the car's in Park position). If you read the mannual again, you'll see that recommendation.
