Catless DP & Pass The Emission Test?

If you have a catless DP, please let us know what kind of DP fix that you have and did your car pass the emission test recently? Curious mind wanted to know since I have an AR catless DP and JB4 installed, and my emission test due in March 2012 and I wanted to be sure no problem ahead of time. Thanks.

If your emission test is done by computer through the OBD II port, the BMS dp fix should take care of the emission test. The tunes just auto delete the codes thrown by catless pipes, but the BMS fix will alter the o2 signal to the ECU.

^^Correct
Also, make sure that once you have the tune off (so it doesn't blind your sensors) you complete a drive cycle to get all your sensors reading again. If you don't do this, your car will be rejected by the inspection machine.

I will use my BTscanner to clear all error codes and performe a complete drive cycle as mentioned above before I take it in for a emission test. Thanks for the feedback.

What do you consider a complete cycle drive? I have been told its not the mile you put on, it the number of duty days, I have further been told its 10 duty days, meaning you have to drive it for 10 different days to give the ECU the data it needs to store so it doesn't read empty when the ECU is hooked up to the OBD 2 tester. Anyone else hear the same thing? I have cleared codes thinking I can go in and get retested after driving 100 miles or so as indicated by the inspector at the inspection station only to still get the message not enough data or no data exists. I know the BT Scanner clears out the ECU of any stored data, while I have used other code clearer's that only remove the code indicated, namely banks 1 and 2 catalysts not performing as they should. Some people have trouble setting ODB2 readiness like myself and received "R" stickers because they

a) never drive their car

b) they leave their driveway in an 8k rpm launch or it doesn't reach these criteria

c) commute doesnt satisfy criteria even after months of driving

Readiness is cleared everytime a CEL is cleared, battery is pulled, new tune is loaded, or fuel trims are 0'd

Here’s the cycle I use to "set" it back up:

1) Start cold engine and idle for approximately 2 minutes, 10 seconds. This checks secondary air injection and evaporative leak detection systems.

2) Accelerate to 20-30 MPH and maintain steady speed for 3 minutes, 15 seconds. This establishes closed loop oxy-sensor operations, response times & switching times.

3) Accelerate to 40-60 MPH and maintain steady speed for 15-20 minutes. This evaluates catalytic converters while oxy-sensor response and switching times are checked.

4) De-accelerate and come to a stop. Idle in gear for 5-6 minutes. This checks evaporative leak detection system.

Remember:

The diagnostic checks above will be discontinued if:

1) Engine speeds exceed 3000 RPM

2) Large fluctuations in throttle position

3) Road speeds exceed 60 MPH

I just passed tonight in NC.

I have the BMS DP Fix and Cobb. They had no idea that I have no CATS.

They use OBD test in NC and no sniff test.

Also in NC

but I have an N55. I'm running a JB4 and BMS 3.5 inch catless DP. Is there a reliable fix for that?

Checking the BMS website, the N55 stage 2 (JB4) has a built in dp fix. Maybe some of the N55 guys will chime in and give you more info.

Why do you have to do an emissions test with a n55? You should have a while before you need to test.

Some states such as North Carolina require an emission test using the OBD II port each year before your tag can be renewed. Yeah it sucks.

Yes, it sucks. Here in NY we have the same requirements. I also have n55, and as far as i know, DP Fix for n55 is not available yet. Thats the only reason i still dont have catless DP

N55 JB4 has an auto clear built in (aka: DP Fix). if you go into the menu and enable it, you're set.

But the problem with enabling the autoclear will cause the JB4 to be active like the N54 JB4 and not allow the OBD scanner to "read" through the OBD port. (unless it's different for the N55 guys)

I had the same concerns and chose to get the standalone BMS DP fix. That way if I decide to disable the JB4 to run diagnostics with the BT scan tool or any other OBD scanner the JB4 won't be active and the scanners can read what they need to read.

The drive cycle has to be completed in a continuous fashion which means I can not do it in stages, right?

Also, someone mentioned the JB4 DP fix will not allow the BT Scanner to scan for error codes, is this true? Please confirm.

Thanks.

Yes, it wont allow the BT scanner to read the ECu if the JB4 is active/on. IOT read the codes and do any clearing of codes from the ECU, the JB4 has to be on Map 0= disabled/off.

NOW......If you have a standalone DP Fix (not the built in one of the JB4) The BT Scanner can read everything from your ECU.

I have a JB4 and also have the separate BMS Dp fix. That way if I want to disable the JB4 for whatever reason, I won't throw O2 sensor codes or have other issues.

No, we have plastic covers over them. We usually have secondary cats as well.

I am more concern what necessary steps that I need to carry out in order to pass the emission test in GA which consisted of ODB II port reading and visual. Visual inspection should not be a problem since the guy who ran the test is my friend and he told me as long as my car pass the ODB II port reading part and he will pass the test.

Given what I have, below are propsed step that I will carry out before taking in for a emission inspection:

1. Set the JB4 map to o
2. Check and clear all error codes
3. Drive the car through a complete drive cycle
4. Ensure no CEL or SEL or any warning lights pop up then take it in for inspection

Does it sound right to you guys? Thanks for the feedback again.

Yes. The N55 was made with a bigger primary cat and did not need another set.

I still think you will need the BMS stand alone DP fix to pass emissions. I doubt you would get through the complete drive cycle without throwing a CEL. Even if you did, the readings from the OBD II port for the o2 sensors would be out of spec. The DP fix will alter the o2 readings to bring it back to spec before it goes to the ECU. Just understand your car is always throwing a code because of the pipes. The JB4 is only deleting the code, it is not changing the signal from the o2 sensors which will be read through the OBD II port during emission testing.
