Volcanic Ash?
Washed the car perfectly on Sunday. By Monday morning theres a thin dusty film of a mid brown colour and fine grit consistency. Could this be the famous ash? Also, do I have to wash the car from scratch again (starting with hose) to avoid swirl marks?

I had the same and it shows up on black paintwork.
Used a microfibre cloth and Meguiars spray wax to lift of the grime, so long as it's not like sand you should be fine.

I think most of it could be pollen rather than ash.
My car is usually garaged, but made the mistake of leaving it for 3-4 hours while doing some gardening... it too was covered, but I got rid of it using a large MF towel and some quick detailer. I would suggest using quick detailer before using quick wax - it's removes the dust better and then use the quick wax for a finishing glow!

thanks for the tips about using mf cloth and detailer. I have both those things in my armoury (obviously) so will try. Hopefully its pollen like moff said, and it is the right time of year. Thought the rain yesterday was gonna clear it all off but all it did was move it around into bigger piles. Grrr again.
