OT: blokes ears/cold and flying
This is one out of left field.
Flying down to Melb tonight and have come down with a lovely cold. Last time I flew with a cold my sinuses felt like they would explode. Just wondering, as my left ear is quite congested, if theres any tips anyone has? |

As a pilot regulary flying, i would say dont do it, a burst drum is the last you want! Im trying to manage it though its all about trying to keep your eustation tube (back of the throat to the inner ear) open. When you have a cold it blocks up and prevents your sinuses from equalising.
Anyway, i find nasal sprays to be the most effective. Ecalyptus drops can help too. By swallowing or holding your nose and gently blowing against it can help "push" some air into the tube if it is not completely blocked and help it equalise a little. At the end of the day though, if you have a bad cold i wouldnt risk it...

Got some psuedoephedrine this afternoon and have taken the first load.. Felt like a crim buying it. The ear relieved prior to that so I'm hoping it stays open long enough.
Usually I find the quasi yawn clears my ears more effectively. Thanks for the tips, see how she goes! |

Alex.. Buy a set of these from your local chemist..
http://www.pharmacyonline.com.au/ear...20x%201%20pair They are called EarPlanes. I use them everytime I fly.. They reduce the pressure into your ears. They are like a one way valve. Insert them into your ears before take off, and then remove once the plane reaches its max height... Once the plane starts its descent, replace them in your ears. |

I got a set of ear planes on my brother's advice. The psuedoephedrine did a great job for y sinuses, and the ear planes were perfect for my ears.
Thank you Joe, you were spot on. I found it very easy to equalise my ears on descent, now they're better than when I left Canberra! Thanks boys! |

I've flown with ear infections. Wasabi.
Also get a spray to break it up. |
