Cracked front BMW Performance rotors :(

I had the car in at BPS Cleveland on Friday getting my AR DPs fitted. While there BPS found that my BMW perf front discs were cracked, which indeed they were - rather badly across all the holes. I've been warned about this happening with any drilled discs & now I can vouch for it. I was toying with the idea of running at last Thursday's trackday at Qld Raceway but had a suspicion that there may have been brake issues. Glad I didn't now. User's beware.

At 23,000kms my OEM pads at the front were nearly 2/3s worn, with a slight tapering towards the leading edge. Backs are barely worn. I gave BPS my original, unused front solid discs to fit along with a set of OEM pads I had spare. I'm now interested to see how the solid discs work on track & if fading becomes an issue.

While I was at BPS I had a good look at Sherrin's 135i racecar. Interestingly it also runs the BMW Performance discs. BPS reckon that Sherrin's disc/pad setup barely lasts an hour on track. They claim to be dynoing ~265KW with that car. It runs a BPS tune only with apparently no bolt on mods bar better cooling.

BMW gives you a two year parts warranty on those Perf rotors. IF you had a dealer install them they would also pay for the labor as well.

Dealer installed them for me, three & a half years ago I suspect they wouldn't warrant them for track use though.

3.5 years ago! Man... then what are you complaining about! You should be changing your rotors out every few track events!! IF I were you I would also be inspecting your brake caliper pistons for cracks and replace your wheel bolts(bc they to have known to crack too).

When you do track events there is stuff you just gotta change out before it fails on the track.

Complaining's what I do best.
I expected the rotors to last longer than the (original) pads & wear out rather than fail. Car's only done ~5 track-days & a total of 23,000km. Pistons all look ok & one wheel bolt has been replaced. I'm thinking of replacing the bolts with studs & nuts.

Yes, Ok.

Member DriveHard reported that a few of his wheel bolt heads had cracked off at a HPDE. He recommended to replace ALL wheel bolts yearly IF your gonna do track events. I think that is a good idea.

You also need to be changing your brake fluid and other fluids(oil, trans, diff) out regularly - as you probably know.

For your replacement rotors you might look into cryogenic treated brake rotors. They freeze them to make the iron molecules tighter and the brake rotors will last longer.

I haven't heard of "cryogenic treated" brake rotors. Will google this. Maybe I'll just put mine in the fridge for a while... I will be looking for an effective replacement that isn't too expensive though. I wonder if EBC do an E82 version of their dimpled & slotted discs. These were fantastic on my E30. Dimples are supposed to be safer than drilled holes.

Yeah, my fluids are changed pretty regularly. I think I've had six oil changes in 23,000kms. Diff & gearbox fluids were changed last year & I may do another power-flush of the brake fluid shortly.

I can't say any of Dackel's points are wrong, but I would agree that I'd have expected those rotors to hold up longer.

Not when you track your car. That puts an awfull strain on your brakes. You can toast your brakes in just one track session. I think after three or four track events new rotors would be a good idea.

I have put about 20K kms on my Performance rotors and they look fine. And I have an nice autobahn in my backyard to go out and play on. I will tell you that your pad life is about half with these rotors - but I think that is to be expected.

I agreed with Dack. Most of the rotors out there will not withstand track days, it is more for daily or aggressively driving.

Look good Steve. Wonder what that set up would cost. I suspect I'd be paying them off for a lifetime...

Yeah, like I said above I expected them to wear out before they failed. At least they didn't shatter...
