Crash Optimized Seats??
Can anyone clarify how our seats are "crash optimized" for rear end collisions?
We don't have active headrests like the e90/92 but I'm trying to figure out where this electrical connector leads to in the seats: Thank you! |

The seatbelt tensioner, buckle sensor and side airbag are all part of the yellow harness (two grey lego blocks).
This plug is either the passenger entry assist button rocker or something crash related in the seat frame itself. I’ll see if I can get the part number off the wire itself. |

All the airbag sensors are in the yellow. That's universal to help firefighters cut wires in an emergency.

Anyone know what this plug controls?
The seatbelt tensioner and buckle sensor are in the grey logo section of the yellow harness according to an e90 post. The airbag is in the other grey lego. The black section in the yellow harness leads to the seat modules and pumps. It's this little two pin black connector that I'm trying to figure out. Long story short I'm going to be retrofitting my 2009 sport seats with 2011 seat modules and harnesses. The modules were updated in 2010 and I'd like to have the correct hardware in place for any future dealer updates. Their ISTA/P software updates stop when older hardware numbers are detected. Everything looks to plug in no problem, but I have always been curious as to what the little plug outside of the harness does. In the e90/92 a similar white plug may control the active head rests for a rear collision. Anyone got a clue? Thanks again! |

That is either the seat belt tensioner or the side airbag. When you have the seat out it will be easy to trace where it goes. I think its the side airbag. The side bag on the later seat I put in my 08 had deployed. I think the connector was different than the rest. I had to snake the connector from my old bag under the upholstery, through where the hinge for the seat back is and then underneath.
Mine wasnt plug and play because i had more options. I had just the yellow airbag connectors and one for the heater. The new seat has lumbar, side support, etc. those needed power from the computer (cem?). There was a good writeup on one of the other forums from guys putting powered seats in their earlier cars that helped. I may have referenced it in a post i started around March or April of this year. To tap into the power i ran a wire from the seat under the console to the back of the radio. The computer wire runs through the car by the driveshaft tunnel. the two wires are nicely twisted, you have to tighten the twists to get the pieces to crimp inot it with. My seats have two memory buttons and i think button 2 works. The factory seats were manual and the car has only butt toasters as an option besides the paint.

This cable connects to a small plastic module attached to the front bottom of the seat frame on the seatbelt side. As the seat slides all the way forward the module is now above and in contact with another bigger plastic module that is attached to the front of the seat rail. It has no wires attached to it but it does contain a magnet. So my suspicion is, once the seat is all the way froward this activates/deactivates something - something that has to do with the seat's all-forward position and both modules in immediate proximity. Just like your household alarm trigger mounted on a window.
It may be limiting the seatbelt pretensioner or front airbag deployment force? But this is definitely not connected directly to either the pretensioner or side airbag. Those connectors are inside the yellow "cube" You can see both modules on the picture below, this is when the seat is ~3 inches away from full-forward position.
