Did i damage my car

2008 bmw 135i. The car ran fine all day today. However about an hour ago i was going out i made it a couple miles away and suddenly the thermastat warning popped up amber and then seconds later turned red and the engine fan kicked on and the car went to limp mode and cut nearly all the power and struggled. I stopped off at a local 7-Eleven and topped off the coolant thinking i may have had a leak but the same thing happened when i tried driving again. Every few min limp mode would cut power and the car kept coming to nearly a complete stop. I had to keep shutting it down waiting a few min and then trying again. I have been reading a few posts and people with similar issues say its a water pump. My question is did i ruin my car and what is this going to cost me?

Oh i should also add. I tried blasting the heat in the car to lower the engine temps but the car just gave off cold air

Yup, no heat when the coolant is not circulating.

Yup dealership just called me.... Water pump is toast!
