Why the manual says 10W-40 but Mobil 1 web says 0w-40?
Why the manual recommend Mobil 1 10W-40 but the Mobil 1 Web says that we should use Mobil 1 0W40. Anyone know why this discrepancy.
This is the link for the web http://www.mobil1.com/usa-english/motoroil/car_care/which_oil/WhichOilManualResults.aspx?option=2 Wish one should I choose? |

The BMW oil is 5W30 and is made by Castro. It's a Euro blend, NOT the junk you get a Walmart. Castro tends to rate their oil thicker than Mobil, and that's why you have a different grade with M1.
The M1 0W40 is also a Euro blend and is BMW approved for extended change intervals with an ACEA 3 and LL-01 (I believe) rating. It's good stuff. I didn't burn any oil with it in my E36 M3, but would burn some with the BMW oil. |

True, but some people like Mobil 1 5W40 "turbo diesel truck" oil. It has a higher shear rating.

Stick with oil you get from your BMW dealership. You'd be surprised what will void warranty these days.

Last time I checked (with a BMWCCA discount) BMW/Castrol 5w30 was cheaper at my dealer's parts counter than Mobil 1 at an auto supply store.
They currently have a 1er Oil Change Kit (7qts, filter, gskets & washers for about $50. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...egoryID=132126 Tom |

I have used Castrol in my 330 ci and now that it has quite a few miles on it, it goes through that stuff like it was water (the kind from the auto parts store, not the dealer). I switched to Mobil 0w40 and it burns much less oil. Yes, the 0w40 ia European formula and I think it is recommended by BMW over there, so I don't think it would void their warranty. Of course my car is out of warranty so I can use what I want. However, tomorrow I pick up my new 135 coupe, so I guess I will see what the factory recommends. However, I doubt that the Castrol from my dealer will be cheaper than the Mobil 1 from the auto supply store. Dan's place may give his customers a break, but my dealer is expensive as hell on everything.

Buy an oil change kit from one of the vendors on here. I forget who it was but they have them at a great price. Maybe united? Get the break in change done then take your time researching different oils.

Im in germany (usps wont ship automotive fluid)....and its really sad our on base car care center or equivalent to auto zone does not carry any oils that can go into a 128i so I would have to buy the oil on german economy and fork out rediculous cash or take it to a bmw shop and still fork out rediculous cash

OK, here is my two cents. I'm in Germany and oil at the dealer is about 9 euros (Castrol's) = about $16 per liter. So I asked the service manager could I use Mobile 0w-40 and would it void the warranty? He told me no it would not as long as it meets the minimum API/SM/CF etc... standards. So for over two years I used it at every oil change on my other BMW without any issues or problems. Disclaimer change oil roughly every 5000 miles. Now I went to a new dealership in K-town two get my oil changed and at first they (service manager) tried to tell me I could not use it was bad for the car could void warranty. I said OK I'm calling the service manager at the other dealership because if you're right I'm going to raise heck. Once I said that he changed his tune and said it was OK to use it but they recommend Castrol. Now when I take my 135 in for its first service I will continue to use Mobile 1 0w-40.

"I went to a new dealership in K-town two get my oil changed " Are you saying you took your own oil to the dealership and expected them to use it for the oil change? BTW, If I changed my own oil I would not mention it at the dealership. For the free oil change.. let them put their own stuff in, then go back to using what you like at the next change interval.

I'm trying to understand why using a wider range oil than the factory recommended one would be in any way harmful?
The way I see this is the following: Factory oil is 10W-40, which means this oil is an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) multi-grade oil, capable of a fluidity/viscosity rating of 10 when operating at Winter temperatures (hence the "W") and delivering 40 fluidity/viscosity at normal operating temperatures. Therefore... the "range" in which this oil operates goes from 10 to 40. If we're to use a 0W-40, we are putting an oil in our engine that is capable of the viscosity our engine requires, and just in case... a little extra performance at low temperatures. I struggle to understand how this could be a potential issue with the engine? Quite frankly, if I wanted to throw my money away, I'd use something like a 5W-60 oil. That way, I'd be protected below and above the normal engine requirements it was originally designed for. Just a thought... Andres |

Why bother, its free from the dealer. I have purchased quarts from the dealer for my m3, also.
