Air Conditioner

I've had my car for just over a year now but it seems that the air conditioner just isn't cold anymore (or really ever was). Could it need regassing after only such a short period of time? Or is this standard for our cars? I had it on 18C the other day and it didn't seem to be as cold as it should have been.

Interesting. When my car was in for it's 933 and software upgrade, I thought to myself that the air-con was positively glacial when I picked it up compared to what it was prior, despite me setting it to the usual 23C.

I pretty much always have it on 24degrees and occasionally down to 20-22 if it really needs it (but only to cool the car down after getting in it). My complaint about the aircon is the vents, not the actual air.

I usually have run it at 22C and sometimes at 21C. However, in the last couple weeks I've had to have it way down.

For instance, yesterday it had three bars of power at 22C, then I turned it down to 18C and it stayed at three bars. I would have thought it would be pumping up the grunt to get the temperature down.

Hey - don't mean to hijack the thread - but my issue with the a/c is the odour it puts out. Have it in this Thursday for a look over. Man - it smells like onions ( and no - it's not me ). Embarressing when you have a passenger. Smells like a cab driver on a double shift

I usually have mine on 18 - but that's just me. In hotter weather, I found hitting max as soon as you get into the car will help cool things much quicker.

Once it gets to a comfortable temperature, you set it back to where you normally would - 18 for me, and I guess 22 for you guys .

Time to have a drive in the mountains, leave your air con on, and set the vents to open. I found that it usually happens when you haven't used either the heating or the cooling for a while. It sometimes happens when it has been raining.

Low bodyfat = get cold easy. High bodyfat = need cold air con settings

You sound like you run the A/C on the Auto setting..I have owned beemers for many years and have always found the A/C to be more efficient on manual settings..Just a thought.
I Always have it set on 22C.. ( bodyfat 9.5% LOL..)

Yeah, those who have met me will know I'm hardly a porker. In fact I get cold quite easily. So that theory is out the window.

Thanks Zuzu, I'll give that a go as I do run it on auto (although it's a little disheartening that a cars that costs as much as BMW's do don't have reliable auto A/C systems).

16c all the time and its still not cold enough

and mine randomly smells like something off, but not quite onions. It's only like 2 minutes out of every 2 hours of use. It's weird.

Pop your hood, take your microfilter off and take a peak. Something nasty might've gotten lodged inside.

As for the less than cold a/c, go into the dealership for a re-gas. Mine's like the arctic when I set it to 16.
