I've owned my car just over two years, and I've got about 5k miles left on the warranty.
If there was anything else out there right now that really excited me, I'd probably be looking to trade already. As it is I'm not sure what I'd get, so I'm hanging on to it for the time being. I'm considering upgrading my winter beater ('94 4Runner) to something that's a little more friendly on the highway, and then upgrading the 135i to something that's a little less friendly for daily driving, but that's probably a 12-18 month plan, not something that's going to happen in the next few months. |

I drove a civic ex for 8 years so I'm planning on putting 200,000 miles on my 1. For those reliability concerns, maybe I just got lucky but after 2 years and 30,000 miles I've had zero problems, knock on wood. Super reliable and still a ton of fun to drive. Once I get mine paid off I'll start my tasteful modding project... I guess it's also different for those who lease. The best day will be when I get to drive my 128i without a monthly car payment.

Besisdes, what car are you going to buy where the manufacturer sends you a free book about your sweet new car and then sends you a carbon fiber pen on your 1's 2nd birthday?

I will consider giving up my 135i once the 1series M coupe is released...that will be my deciding factor to keep or sell. Not posting as much because I have pretty much modded everything I can mod besides upgraded turbo's and meth and those come with a money factor I don't have at the moment.

I'm one of those that bought the car thinking I'd keep it forever. Now, after all the issues I've dealt with... wished I had leased instead.
I'll definitely will be leasing the 1M and buy it out if problem free.

If I get 5 ta 6 out of it I will be happy... Love the way it drives but not the reliability and that scares me...

Yeah buddy you got first dibs (all of your compliments have helped your cause of course!).
I have not had the reliability issues others have spoken of beyond the 3rd taillight and a headlight bulb going out...other than that it has been rock solid |

I would like to finally own a car to the point where its paid off. Im on car 3 now and I didnt pay off my previous 2 before trading them in. Having a fun car and not making payments is a goal of mine. Will it be this car? I hope so.

My car is 2 years old and i have 38,000 miles on it. As much as i like it and like driving it i'm not sure how long i'll be driving her after the warranty and maintenance run out. Although with my rate of mileage, I dont think I'll be rightside up on the loan for 2-3 more years anyway. Overall reliability has been good, but there have been some small problems that i am afraid will be too expensive after the warranty is out. (window motor, radio, now my passenger seat seatbelt sensor keeps tripping at random). |

I've noticed plenty of people are selling up too. I think it's the norm in the US to keep a car for 2-3 years and move on, especially in this demographic. Over here in Oz, a fair amount of people keep there car for 5+ years. Also, I think the fact that the 1M is coming out is pushing a lot of people out of their 135i's. I also think that people selling their 135i's are fairly well represented in the forums, they want everyone to know they are moving on.

I don't see this car as a collectible. It doesn't sell very many units - and that's not because of a manufacturer's limit, but the lack of more substantial demand.

Current demand isn't really any indication of a classic. The E30 M3 wasn't sold in high numbers when it was new, and that's true of lots of cars that are considered classics right now. It's a fickle market, and very hard to predict. |

I'm trying to upgrade to an E92 M3 before it's lifecycle ends. I feel like that's the car to own long term. Possibly the last high revving N/A car BMW makes. The 1 M Coupe has my interest, but all this talk about building an M car on a budget/keeping the price low usually means lots sacrifices. That's not what I want. But we'll see.

When I was shopping- over the past 8 months- I did not find a lot of used 135's at all- I limited my search to MT cars, and they were few and far between.....

Current demand is really no indication of a classic. Look at the M coupe... they sold like shit and are now selling for almost 80% of their original MSRP (2001-2002)

I bought my 123d on my company so I could sell it after 4 years (once it's fully tax-deducted) and get another one, but frankly, I don't see any car out there that could properly replace mine, as it fits my needs 100%:
-doing a lot of km/miles so I need the fuel efficient diesel -yet, the engine is amazing with its 204hp so great fun to drive -I still have 2 decent back seats so if needed, I can take wife and kids in there, too -And yet, it's a 'small' car, perfect for me as I drive a lot in Brussels ('big' city to Belgian standards ) and I often need to park in small underground garages for work. -the car is just ff'in hot, I still get looks on the highway on a daily basis. In fact it's a real 'babe magnet' but I have never exploited that . Some guys/girls just totally think it's an M3, just amazing... Somehow, BMW managed to build a car that's just perfect for me. I couldn't imagine a better car to suit my needs. I can't see which other car could replace that anytime soon. My guess is that I'm gonna drive that baby until it almost falls apart (or, maybe max 8 years). I drove my previous car 8 years too (ford mondeo diesel) and it still was like new when I sold it (180.000km / 120.000 miles), those diesels can take some hits.. I've been thinking about what other car might be as goods as my 1-er, but they all fail: -BMW 3 coupe - not as exclusive here as my 1-er -Audi TT - no proper back seat, only 170hp diesel - sucks -other mass production brand coupes (peugeot, citroen, ford, ...) - no rear wheel drive and engines not up to the standard I'm used to now... For example, the new peugeot RCZ is the mirror of the Audi TT, but has only FWD and it's most performant engine has211hp with a 0-100km/h time of 7.3. My 204hp diesel gets in 7.0 to 100, thx to the RWD I suppose.... Thanks but no thanks, I'm sticking to my 1-er for many years to come! Take into account that cars are way more expensive in Belgium (I roughly paid 42.000€ for my 123d , that's around 54.000 USD right now) and you can imagine I want to exploit my investment to the full . Over time, I will pimp it a bit to keep it 'updated' but that's not urgent right now ... |

I'm keeping mine for as log as it lasts. Bought it outright a couple of years ago and with the mods I love it now. I kinda like cars when they get a few years old, they have character and I feel it an injustice at swapping them for a newer model every few years. I agree with those though that are on leases, different story.

My car is purchased....it's over 1.5 years old and only broke 10,000 km (6,000 miles). You can say its a garage queen. Given the low usage, I haven't experienced much reliability issues (knock on wood).
Coming from a family that was in a situation where we got new cars almost every other year (between family members and their lease renewals), I kinda like the feel of ownership. (Ask me when my first repair bill comes<--should it ever!). I feel that I appreciate the vehicle more. |

Z4 M Coupes were just as rare, but were immediately hit with heavy depreciation and don't show any signs of making a recovery. It's a personal thing, but I do think that the Z3 MC will retain better value than the Z4 MC over time, but neither will ever be much over 50% of MSRP. As for the 1er being collectible, sales have been about 10x what either M Coupe was, and it's not differentiated from the 3er as much as the Z cars were. I don't see there being any collectible qualities to the 1er, but feel free to prove me wrong. |
