New Subtle "Mod"

Hi everyone,

I just got finished installing my new "mod." I've always loved the look of older 911's that had the stone guards on the rear fender. I liked it on the z3's as well, so I decided to try it out on the 135i. I bought the OEM BMW Z3 magnetic stone guards (PN 82110004829) in black. I had to test fit first, then trim about an inch and change the bottom angle for it to line up properly on the e82. Its very subtle on jet-black, and may not look great on another non-black color (or you may think it doesn't look great on black either).

I figure its somewhat practical and adds a cool euro flavor to the car without being overly noticeable. Sorry for the crappy pics.

Thanks,

Tim

i always chuckled when a post ended with " Flame Suite on " .... I always imagined the OP sitting at his pc hitting F5 with his eyes closed and then slowly opening..

To be trurhful... it doesnt look bad... and your right, i dont know if it would look good on a white car for instance... i give it 2 to 3 thumbs up on a scale of 1 to 5

you know, that would be great for auto-x er's to help ward off the stone chips and melted rubber bits that tend to collect there.. I forget, do they make a set for behind the front wheel ????

I had this in mind as well. I usually get about the same response for my mud-flaps (2-3 stars)...usually not a liked mod but very practical and to be honest I like the look. It definitely beats blue painters taps all over the rear quarter! Food for thought:

Don't worry I won't add the accordions on the bumper...

I like it does the z3 fender diameter and shape match up perfectly to the 1? Or did you have to modify that as well?

as a true detailer i know that the front needs something like this much more because that area is a dirt magnet.

your tape is cosmetic, doenst look bad, but has no function.

i've toyed with the idea of adding the mudguards. i think they would be a good starting point for a widebody rear bumper mold, minus the fenders of course.

Inspired by the OP, I just installed these on my 2008 white 135i, they look pretty good however I have quite a bit of black accents on my car(wheels, shadowline trim, rear diffusor etc) I'll try to snap some pics!

Wow, I never imagined I'd be an inspiration! TT if you are still working with yours, I did cut mine a bit. I checked before buying and the z3 uses a very similar overall wheel diameter so I assumed it would be a close fit. It can match up, but due to the different side skirts (between the z and the 1) it won't look quite right. There are different ways I played with to get the look I liked.

adrean: They are a plastic-ish type of material. Think of an enlarged refrigerator magnet (I'm sure its not a coincidence). They are about 2 mm thick with a matte finish.

matt: I notice my rear mudguards do actually serve a purpose. The rear of my car used to be covered with dirt kicked up on the rear bumper. The mudguards made an improvement to this. They also help those behind and add a cosmetic flare that I like. I agree the front mudguards would be more beneficial because they will help protect the side of the car which also gets caked with dirt from the front tires. Keep in mind I also have wheels that are offset farther outside the fender and run higher than normal camber in the front (which leaves part of the tire outside of the wheel well). This post was actually about the stone guards (the barely visible black pieces on the rear quarters). These will also have only limited function, but since the rear fenders flare, they are susceptible to debris and cones...

Still have them on, and I really like them. They are really not that visible unless you look, but I like the way they accent and almost widen the rear of the car. TT, I will excited to see your on a white car! I forgot to mention also, that on ebay I saw a seller that has aftermarket versions of these in many colors, but I decided to go OEM since the black matched properly.

A little off topic, but why do you have two different wheels on front and back?

Good eye! I bought them from someone on the forum. Apparently he got the front SSR's from someone for cheap and then bought the MT1's in the back to somewhat match. I bought them from him new for a good deal for nice and light wheels. Recently I sprayed both bronze to match. I don't think anyone has ever noticed this in person (maybe because its hard to look at both at the same time), but it is more obvious in pictures. Honestly, I didn't really care what they looked like, but just wanted light wheels!

Yes, its magnetic. One side is a different finish, so its not meant to be flipped, but you could switch sides and flip if you wanted to get the fronts positioned correctly. Not sure how that would look...

I have the part number in the first post. You should be able to order from any BMW dealer including an online dealer like tischer or united. I got mine from Ebay. There are other sellers on ebay that have non-OEM ones, but you can get them in lots of different colors. Should be less than $40.
