I used to agree with this but its not really true. If you live in hilly terrain or take trips to the mountains in winter AWD is definitely your friend.
Toronto gets about 12" more snow than Chicago yearly so I don't get your point there either. I think you should spend a winter in Stowe, VT where they get 4 to 5 times more snow than Toronto, add in mountainous terrain and tell me how much you love RWD then. Having said that an AWD 1 series doesn't make much sense to me esp. a convertible which will never happen. I'm not undermining the importance of snow tires either. AWD with snows (actually Nokian all weathers) is how I roll now that I'm in a more rural, hilly area. RWD with snows wasn't cutting it (or even getting me out of my driveway)

I think RWD with snow tires is probably fine if you are always on plowed roads that are just snow packed. It may even be fine in a couple of inches of fresh snow. When you start getting 4+ inches on the road, the conditions become sloppy quick. AWD (with the proper tires) is very handy for these kinds of conditions or in snowy mountainous/hilly terrain as mentioned above.

Both new variants of the BMW 1 Series Coupé come as standard with a wide range of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration, an Auto Start Stop function, a gearshift point indicator and ancillary units with on-demand management and control. Both the BMW 120i Coupé and the BMW 118d Coupé naturally fulfil the EU5 emission standard, meaning that the BMW 1 Series alone now comes with 21 models complying with this requirement. A further important point is that five models in the BMW 1 Series already offer a CO2 emission rating of less than 120 grams per kilometre, with the BMW 116d standing out as the absolute leader in terms of fuel economy and emission management. The additional changes for Europe include entry-models for the BMW 1er Coupe as the Cabrio already features these options in Europe.
The ltd edition 1er in Marrakesh Brown foresees the new BMW X1 Sport Activity Vehicle which will offer this exclusive color.

The BMW 118d Coupe and the BMW 120i Coupe will not be sold in North America.

Well actually I don't live in Toronto, I live in Northern Ontario. Just put Toronto down because no one knows any other place in Canada.
I have been to Stowe well Jay Peak for some great skiing in 3 plus feet of snow.
I can understand what you mean for getting up a driveway with tonnes of snow, but in all honesty what I have learned is if you can't get up your driveway why are you driving else where?

For 2010 and following years, I only want ONE thing: make the 1 series 300 kg lighter with the M package, at no extra charge.

I know the tii will be lighter, but lighter cars should be standard for each model. All cars get bigger and heavier these days, and that just makes them less appealing (at least to me).

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the current car is heavy, my logic is that if the car is as great and fun and wonderful as it is with 1478kg to 1580 kg of weight, I can't even imagine what it would be if it were a 1150 to 1280 kg car !

At the very least I hope BMW shaves 100 kg off the weight. Please?

You could always remove the rear seats! Isn't that what Porsche does in there GT3 RS? Oh and add some scaf-holding.

You haven't seen my driveway- it doesn't take much if all 4 aren't turning!
I don't have the option of not driving through bad weather. For years I never had trouble with RWD/snow tire combo but my commute was shorter and flatter. Now I can't avoid hills and I can't count on roads being plowed when I leave at 5:30AM. I made the mistake of thinking FWD/snow tire combo would do the trick- it didn't. I actually felt less in control with FWD and really have no use for that layout. I can understand that for some (far less than those that buy them) an AWD BMW makes sense. For me it was a compromise I wasn't willing to make. For about the same up front cost I own 2 vehicles, 1 to get me there safe through any conditions and 1 to truly enjoy driving on nice days.

AWD is great for when it rains. If you think a RWD car in the snow is fun a AWD car is also incredibly fun.
