Somebody here has done it, I believe. But since the dimension and the placement on the car are different from the 135i, other changes are required. At a minimum, M3 half-shafts are necessary, I believe.

The other options mentioned in this thread are much more sensible IMHO.
And you need the M3 subframe, so it's not real practical unless you have a lot of money. As int2str said, the bolt in options are the way to go on a 135i.

not sure about 135's, but in my 130... hold down the DTC button for 10 seconds, 100% off, side ways single wheel spinning action lol

OEM, easy swap if you have a n55...1M drive shaft, 1M/M3 output shafts, M3 diff.

That's what people say but not true. It has been done in a 335. OEM LSD is a clutch type so requires maintenance. It will also come w/ a finned diff cover to aid in cooling.

"What's the best LSD" depends on what you plan to do w/ your car. i.e. track or DD.

How about for just daily driver with snow issues?
There is nothing more fun than spinning a tire all day and night in the snow.
Will a gear SLD help with this?

No it wouldn't. Gear type LSDs become open diffs when 1 wheel is unloaded/has zero traction.

Wavetrac has a center friction plate that grips under low-load and zero-load conditions.

http://www.autotechdriveline.com/a_wavdiff.shtml

But Wavetrac is still not close to a real clutch-type LSD for controlled drifting.

Didnt know that. Its not a "gear type" perse? - sort of a bastardized hybrid then.

I'm looking to buy my LSD for my 135is. I had one built for my e90 330i and have the following observations:
  • Regarding the drain plug. This is a non-issue. I had one installed when I had my LSD built.
  • The clutch type LSDs will start to lock under high torque conditions regardless of whether there is slip. In corners under acceleration you will get some understeer caused by the diff locking even in conditions where the traction is good and there is no reason for the diff to be locking.

I expect that because of the later and because I will be on the road most of the time and not on the track I will get a quaife for my 135is.

My racecar has a diff built by Diffsonline, and for my 128 I will not hesitate to get one from Dan.

That said I wanna expand HeelToe's explanation; there is also something called breakaway preload ... Basically when you approach/enter a turn, the car needs to overcome the preload to break the "locking" between wheels. So that car can actually turn, like an open diff if yiu will... You need to adjust your driving accordingly at track or at street

As was mentioned above, you'll need more than a diff transplant - subframe also amongst other things.

Yup, basically the whole complete rear end setup from a M3, and a 1M or custom propshaft, and then swap over the 135 rear brakes into that M3 setup.
