Are you running an aggressive tune on the petro 94?

Yes JB4 backend flash now and even before the backend flash i would run with the regular JB4 on map 2,3 and 5.

I try to run 60/40 of Petro94 and e85

on the GTI i used unisettings and it worked out great. Never an issue even on such an old car. That car actually has never seen anything other than Petro94 while in Canada which is about 90% of the time for all of 10+ years....10% ethanol in PC94 and its all good

Esso: 91 nor 93 say ethanol-free, hence it probably has up to 10% ethanol.
Shell: website specifies No ethanol in 91.

http://www.esso.ca/ethanol
Our Esso branded gasoline ethanol level never exceeds 10%.

http://www.esso.ca/quality-fuels
Octane 93
Esso SUPREME+ is the highest octane gasoline available at Esso stations, and it is offered in select stations in the greater Toronto area. Esso SUPREME+ contains more cleaning agents than our other gasoline grades, which in turn have higher levels of detergency than the minimum government standards. That makes Esso SUPREME+ the gasoline grade with the highest octane level and the most cleaning power of all our Esso gasolines. To see if your car should use this fuel, check the owner's manual.

No matter which button you select you will get a hose worth of the previous purchase....unless the pump has a dedicated nozzle for your choice.
That said....I finally read (some of) the manual which indicates minimum octane of 87 for my 128i. I switched from Shell 91 to 89 for the last 3,000kms and don't notice any diff in performance. The liters/100kms is still registering @ 10.1, so I'm actually getting better "gas mileage" because I'm getting more fuel for my $$...but I digress. YMMV

So, you may get about 1L of 87 in with your 91 or whatever. Makes such a small difference it is practically meaningless.

I plan on running COBB Stage 1 aggressive + FMIC with Esso 93

I heard second hand that COBB wasn't a fan of our gas quality. So I asked them directly and got this:

Hi John,
Sorry for the delay in responding.
We have seen some really inconsistent results with fuel in Canada. So I would say that you can give it a try, but you will definitely want to use the Accessport in order to datalog and live monitor your cylinder corrections to make sure the engine is running safely.
Thank you,
Adam

So I will log it and see...will report back. The question I have is in regards to knock. Even a stock car will knock under load (or a shitload of other reasons)...how much knock is too much? I had a LT1 fuel injected build that knocked constantly...and it knocked bone stock too constantly. Maybe chalk that up to American small block quality

Can you guys explain why you want ethanol free gas? I mean I run 50/50 chev 94 and e85 ideally if my 94 had more ethanol I could use less e85. I guess it depends what you want but I welcome any and all ethanol.

How about Costco? The 91 pump says no ethanol, at least here in GTA. Is anyone using Costco gas?

Just ran a log with the cobb Stg 1 aggressive + FMIC with 100% Esso 93

Logs were clean (had some minor timing correction on cyl 5, but no big deal).

However, I have a boost leak somewhere, and was only seeing 13psi max boost...

Right now Esso93 gets a pass from me for an aggressive map...

Some say ethanol causes HPFP failures. My previous 135i had never seen any gas other than Shell but the pump still failed at 8800km with no warning.

I've been running e30-e50 for probably the last year once a month and have had no issues. 12-15 tanks full and hpfp flows strong. Can't see how up to 10% could do any harm, as far as I know most vehicles made within the last 10 years can handle 10% ethanol. Considering most of the united states' gas is 10% or more ethanol I don't see why it changes in canada.

Fixed my boost leak...now running upwards of 16psi with no correction...even on warm days (25 degress plus).

Esso93 seems perfectly find for the Stg1 Aggressive + FMIC tune (Cobb)

BTW the car feels wild in the mid/upper rev range...

Just filled up with esso 93. My car took overnight to adapt and today it felt different, aggresive ina different way than Shell 91. I think more top end power & slightly less low end. With 91 My wheels would break traction more at street cornering speeds 50-60 km/h

So far I like it - I will interchange with 91 a few times or maybe do $20 back to back experiments.

Have anyone heard any issues about sulfur for 93 Esso. I recall other Esso was bashed because of high sulphur or something

Back ground.
n52 engine tuned by Evolve for "Ron 95" aka 91 0% ethanol octane
So far Shell 91 was better than Petro 94, by better I mean more aggressive in low end, same in top end.
Canadian Tire 91 was comparable to Shell 91

Really? Canadian Tire is equivalent? I didn't think CT was a top tier gas. And the only reason I do petro 94 is because of "free" gas with a business creditcard. There was no option for shell

Just called Esso, they're claiming 0% Ethanol in Supreme and Supreme+ across Canada, not just Alberta.
Quote:

So, I wonder which it is? Esso saying directly that it has no ethanol should be the answer . . . unless they're lying or the rep just doesn't know.

From Esso's website:

Quote:
Almost all regular gasoline now has some ethanol in it. Our Esso branded gasoline ethanol level never exceeds 10%.
This could imply that they are referring to regular grade only - not premium. It's certainly not clear. Has anyone that was previously running Shell 91 noticed a drop in mileage with Esso 93? That would be an indicator of Ethanol.

Which Fuel were you running previously on that tune?
