radar detectors vs OPP
Hey there fellow Canadians,
I just got my tax return in and I was thinking about getting a radar detector, specifically the belltronics Sti magnum. I was going to get it from kmph.ca 1. Do any of you have experience with radar detectors against the OPP? 2. Had anyone here used kmph.ca before? 3. Your thoughts on the purchase? Thanks! |

No thoughts on your questions, but I really like my Belltronics STi detector. I've kissed it many times!

Radar detectors are very illegal in Ontario. If you are going to use one the best ones are the Beltronics STiR+ or the Escort Redline. If you get the redline, you must hardwire the power to it (don't use the cigarette lighter power cord) and mount it as high as possible,on the windshield and run it in dark mode.

They are illegal in Ontario, but I know people that use radar detectors. Any particular reason as to why you would have to hardwire it and run it in dark mode all the time in Ontario?
Does the OPP have radar jammers and can tell when you have a radar?

Yes they are illegal, that is why I'm looking for undetectable detectors, like the sti magnum. I was planning on hardwiring the detector through the cars electronics and using a sun visor mount to discretely hide it.

Also, I think valentine sells built in radars into the rearview mirror.

They have radar detector detectors too. The Escort Redline, Beltronics STiR+ and Magnum are invisible to them. The Valentine1 is highly visible to RSFSR detector detectors. |

Get an undetectable one, Bel/Escort make a few although a bit pricey.

How would it be undetectable? Cops just can't receive the radar signal?

Keep in mind it's pointless if the RD is hanging on your windshield in plain view. Off the top of my head I think the few undetecable models are 9500ci, Redline, Sti, Sti-R, and Sti-R+ or something like that. Of those I would try to get the one that doesn't come equipped with laser jammers since Escort lidar products are average at best (although their RD's are pretty good). If you need LIDAR protection, go with Laser Intereceptors. Edit: I will add if you pick up refurbished 8500's from Escort (eBay), those usually come with the older m3 antenna which is preferable b/c those too are not detectable. I used to read up on this stuff ALL the time when I used to speed, not the case anymore lol. |

haha. How fast were you going? I drive 140 pretty much all the time, and I use my eyes and common sense as a radar detector.

In my city most of the cruisers keep their radar on while driving, I get at least a 30 seconds heads up before I even see them. Just because I have the radar detector doesn't mean that I'm not still on the lookout for undercover patrols. Quote:
How has it saved me from tickets? A few times I've been beating it and my detector will alert me of a signal, I immediately hit the brakes, slow down to the legal limit and let them pass me. I've been tagged by two speeds traps but I had at least a 20 second alert before the cop coming into view. The best part is, is that cops radar only has a few hundred meter range, whereas my detector can pick up to one mile away... kind of unfair |
