BMW Recall: 2010-2012 1-Series for VANOS Bolts Issue (6 cylinder models)

Looks like BMW is issuing a recall.

Anyone know if this will affect Canadian models?

already had mine pop at around 75,000 km on my 2011, these are the bolts that hold the vanos module in place, very dangerous if you don't get them fixed..

mine were fixed on a break fix, but if they're issuing an official recall, maybe ill go in again and get the "fixed" bolts installed and not the stock ones that im fairly confident they just replaced

^ as per the link: only 20,000 cars are effected in Canada? I'm wondering how they deduce as to who are the "effected" ones?

Well I think it's easily explanable. According to The Globe and Mail, 26,000 BMWs were sold in Canada by the end of last October (so let's say 30,000 vehicules for 2013). Multiply this with the 3 years range for the recall, you have 90,000 cars. Now a bunch of them aren't available with the N55, and 35i vehicules are a minority of BMW's sales (at least here in Quebec we see a lot more 28i). Even more that according to some members that have contacted BMW, not all cars of the said years are affected. In the end I think 20,000 sounds pretty much it

On the BMW website there's a recall checker - just do a goggle search and it'll come up.

Thanks. I could not find a recall checker on the BMW Canada site - I found this one on the BMW USA site. Is this the one you used?

It's probably advisable to check on a daily/weekly basis for a while: BMW might not have updated their site or initiated the recall yet.

When I entered my wife's 128i into this checker, it indicated that there are no recalls on it.

However, I called today to schedule a service appointment for my wife's 128i and asked if it's part of the recall - it is. I'm bringing it in one June 13.

If they told me it wasn't, I would have asked that they put a note in my file, just in case.

Maybe the checker is only for US cars?

Finally received the recall letter for my May 2010 Production 2011 135i.

The letter states that BMW Canada does not have enough parts to go around, and will send another letter when they do.

Only then will owners be able to book an appointment with their preferred dealership to get the repair.

Okay, I just got the letter for my '11 128. It's not a recall letter, it's a "warranty coverage extension" letter. I'm confused, is this not a recall? The letter does not say to come in and have the bolts replaced, but that warranty is being extended for an additional 10 years with unlimited mileage, and they will cover all repair costs related to this issue. So, you have to wait for them to break and cause possible engine damage before they replace them?

That's interesting. Does it say what the extended warranty covers? Is it just Vanos failure or is it broader than that? If it were the whole powertrain that would be pretty good, but I can't see them doing that.

Just re-read the part of your post where they say "related to this issue". That kind of sucks, replacement of the bolts would be preferable. Surprising that BMW is willing to risk potential accidents over this issue and the liability it would bring.

Yup, my letter same as above. 10yrs./unlimited miles:"we are extending the warranty coverage for the 2 variable camshaft timing(VANOS) units on your vehicle... BMW will cover all necessary repair costs related to this issue." So any engine damage related to a VANOS failure is also covered. Not impressed. Plan on keeping mine for a long time- light mileage, summer only driver. So after 10 yrs., then what? Get on the ball BMW Canada and fix it.

Contacted BMW Canada- no change, extended warranty(from in-service date), no recall. So, if you're planning on keeping your car long term (only 5 yrs. left on that extended warranty for me), you're on your own. Unbelievably poor factory support when they'd rather risk your engine than replace a few bolts. They said it was "not possible" to replace parts prior to failure. "Not possible?"-really? Must be tough times at BMW. Future BMW buyers beware.

Hadn't heard anything since receiving my recall notice several months ago so I called the dealership. They told me to bring it in because they have the parts, so they will be doing the replacement. I wonder if it's 135's that are getting the replacement and 128's that are getting the extended coverage? Either that or BMW started by sending out the recall letters for replacement and then decided to change to extended warranty, but still honouring the original replacement recall for those that received the early letters. Anyone with a 135 get a letter for extended coverage only?
