My 135i Dilema!
Let me start off explaining my situation, I am in college and landed an internship at a very good company in May. So with that I used the "Payne" method to order a BMW, got one just several hundred over invoice. Then in June I decided to cancel my order thinking there may be a chance I dont keep my internship at the end of the summer. But i just found out I am going to stay on.
So here is where the dilema begins, Yesterday I got an email from my car dealer telling me that they still let the car get built and it came in. I cancelled my order so therefor it isn't "my" car. But I am going to look at the exact car I ordered today and he said he would give me the same price. I know it is my choice whether to get the car or not, I just wanted to get your guys opinons! Thanks! PS: I currently own/trying to sell a 2006 STI. |

Well if you know you're going to have a permanent position with your company once the intership is over, then yeah, why not. You've already got an expensive car so I guess you already know what you're getting yourself into as far as that goes...

Easy. Bearing in mind that nothing is certain and managing your exuberance over getting a job (congrats), buy a 4 cyl that's inexpensive but reliable for around $15K. Take the cash you would have spent on the BMW and place it in a mutual fund. Leave it there for 10 yrs and use it as a down payment on a home.

It depends on whether you can really afford it. If you've accounted for everything else you have to pay for (like a place to live) and have a safety net of some kind (called parents), then go for it.

If you're like 22 or 23 I say buy the car now while you're still young enough to get away with a dicey-but-doable financial decision, 'cause when you get up to 27 or 28 it gets a little harder to ignore other more important financial objectives.

i think it depends on your financial flexibility. with the economy being what it is, companies are going to continue to scale back, and if they are cutting workforce, interns and contract employees are usually the first to go.
if having the financial responsibility of this car will absolutely sink you if you lose your job or have to go get a lower paying one, it may not be the best time. if you have fallback options (like going back to live with your parents or something), then it's a lot safer. btw, pretty cool of your dealer to give you the same deal after you backed out of the original one... |

I went to see it 2 days ago, It looked so great. I wanted to purchase it right there, so I got an apprasel on my 2006 STI (17k Miles). They wouldn't even give me $22k for it. I was like yeah not a chance I am trading that in here. So i may go to CarMax to see what they offer me, plus I bought the car from CarMax orignially.

If you're barely able to afford a 1'er now, you should be able to afford one in 2 years if all goes well. (And if not....well, you'll be glad you didn't....) |

I think what also makes it a tough desicion from a financial standpoint is that right now i have equity built into my car. I currently owe only 13k on my STI, so I would have some extra money to throw around.

must be a hell of an internship! i just graduated from college and used all 3 internships i took and took that money and bought mine. IF you wanna be a millionare then put it in a mutual fund, if you wanna pick up some chicks and have a good time then get the 1er!

I sold my 06 sti for my 135 and havent regretted it for a sec. My STI had 13k on it and I got 25 for it trade in. I only paid 31k for it 2 years ago so it was a good time to let it go. The 135i is much more refined and smooth I would go for it.

Have you thought about a used M3? You could have luxury, speed, and save money for your future.
Also the people that are telling that you can be irresponsible with your money because your young have no clue what they are talking about. It is true that you will have more time to recover from bad mistakes, but if you make sound decisions when you are young (like saving and investing instead of spending ) you will have more money, more cash flow, and a higher standard of living as you get older. The rich let their money work for them. The poor work for money Also if you are getting the car as a panty remover, a used Porsche or M will work better than an entry level BMW.

gee, gargoyle, let the kid have some fun...seriously though, if you are starting out, practicality comes first... not a good looking car, not a panty remover but you could probably kick 128's ass(oops no kill stories right)...cobalt SS is my choice, wooowee twin turbos too and look at the number, 22K.
