Who else likes the Golf R?
links:http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2057
I for one would have liked to have bought one in 5 doors. More practical than 135 and only slightly slower. Probably 20k less too. A poor man's S3? Though I think it looks better than the S3. Shame it is not available earlier. Anyway, still enjoying the 135, except for the lack of storage space in the cabin, and the poorly place cup holder, and the poor fuel consumption. |

well, those are the things that I am prepared to overlook as the 135 still has a lot of strong points, so I am still a 135 fan, just not a blind one! Doesn't mean that I can't whinge about it's short fall though.

Of course you can! I don't like the door handles (seriously).

I am a fan of the Golf R. May pick one up when it becomes available in Australia. Not sure about it being a poor man's S3 though as it cost more than the S3 in the UK and actually has more power than the S3 (yeah I know it's just the difference in tune). The AWD hardware is also more advanced than the S3. S3 uses the same Haldex AWD as the R32, but the new R has an additional electric pump which ensures AWD is constant and doesn't require slip before transfering torque to the rear. Should translate to much better driver's car but we will see.

That's another thing that annoys me. Too far forward, not enough leverage for closing the door!
Anyway, this is not meant to be a "What you don't like about your 135" thread. I never liked the R32 though. Drove my friend's once. Too nose heavy and understeery. Sound great though. |

Well I hope not! But if you go by UK prices then it will definitely cost more. If it comes in at R32 prices, they will sell heaps, including one to me!

I like it, although I hate the center exhaust look. (Just seems like it's asking for leg burns - and forget about having a hitch.)
Truth is, though, if I get a VW hatch, it'll probably be a TDI Golf - already have enough performance in my 135i. Since you guys in Oz get the 1er hatch, do you think the Golf hatch or 1er hatch is overall better? I remember Clarkson hated the 1er hatch Top Gear's comparison.... (But I think that was a previous-gen 1er.) |

Its a beautiful car and after a nice tune it will be competitive with the STI/Evo market esp after a nice turbo upgrade so watch for it, 2 door that is.. I used to have a VW before my 135i, and all I can say is that the one thing BMW's lack is a community and a following like VW/Audi's have. Not to say there is not following because obv we wouldnt be on forums, but its just not the same...just a little rant haha

Yeah, unfortunately by all accounts, it won't come to the USA. VW is afraid it'll cannibalize GTI and Golf R sales. (And they're probably right.)

It is not coming to Oz either. Not sure wht they bother to make the Scirrocco in ther first place if they are worried about affecting the sales of GTI. Surely they can import the Scirrocco and 5dr GTI only? That will satisfy people who like the sporty look of a 3Dr and the ones who want the practicality of a 5Dr.

How much does the Golf R weigh? The R32 is a porky ~1500kg and it shows in the handling and acceleration. Still a fun thing to punt around but nowhere near as good as a 135i Coupe.

About 65kg lighter than R32 from memory of something I read...if so it is lighter than 135i then. And for the price of the 125i, I think the Golf R is going to be a bit of a performance bargain.

I will prefer this than the S3.
May change over when the 4 door version comes along.
