Maybe those of us that have yet to take delivery of the new 3 should wait. I can't believe this car has a shimmy....KIA?

It doesn't really scare me, but its very unsettling to have it shaking in my hands when coming off the freeway at about 40 mph. Car is rock solid at higher speeds, but it seems to only happen at 40-50 mph range.

It hasn't happened mine. I think it happens on cars with the sport package. Could something be faulty with the suspension system that's causing the problem?

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 330i sport package and haven't noticed any shaking, at least no shaking that's not caused by uneven roads.

Hey JVFan, My 330i doesn't have the shakes......I wouldn't worry about it. If it does, the dealer will notice it too and have it looked at!

The BMW America technician told me that all E90 has this problem. If I were you I would rethink getting the car. My car has been in the shop for last 2 weeks.
Once the dealer get u the car, they wash hands and do not care about it. That is what is going on with me. BMW dealers are arrogant, atleast the few I have delt with. Good Luck if you want to go with yours. I am weighing my options. |

Shaking steering wheel does happen. Its not an e90 thing but a common BMW thing. My Z3 has come in and out of having shakes sometimes.
Usually alignment and suspension can be the cause but it may still be shaking after all of that is worked on too. I have seen it cause from rims that were not put on properly. I've seen tune shops balance the tires with tiny tiny little weights just to get the shakes out. My steering wheel no longer shakes. I have had the suspension replaced though. I also used to get shakes when breaking as opposed to cruising at certain speeds. This was because the brakes were not balanced. Active steering is supposed to mask this I think. I prefer a car without computer steering though so I can feel the road and whats going on with the car. BMW couldn't fix the problem in my car because they look at a computer that has a checklist of stuff. I know a guy here in Santa Monica that actually drives the car and can tell what the problem is. The kind of mechanic thats been working on cars forever. He actually fixed my rough idle. Instead of using a computer to see what was wrong he listened to the engine block with a stethescope. Don't worry. All of your cars are fixable. It just depends on the place you take it to. |

i don't have any steering wheel shake (that i consider abnormal at least). car drives beautifully as far as i'm conserned. it does shimmy or pull sometimes when i really stomp on the gas, but after messing with it i think it is really just the pavement i'm on b/c it doesn't always do it now. as the car settles in it seems to feel better.

I have been driving a 97 328i with the sport package and I've had the same problem. Exactly as described by everyone. Little steering wheel shimmy between 40 and 50 mph. Nothing below and nothing above. For me this only happens when I change to my winter wheels and tires. When I first got the winter wheels, I had the balance and alignment looked at, and nothing. When I change back to the summer wheels, it goes away. Comes back every winter. So it makes me think that it's something to do with the combination of the wheels and the suspension. But after worrying about it for a few years I decided just to live with it. I just try not to drive between 40 and 50 much. I haven't seen any unusual wear patterns on my tires. It's interesting that this problem still happens on a new car.

DDTAN: That's easy - it means one or more of your winters are not round, and/or not straight. If you can live with it, fine - otherwise, I'd take it to a good shop with a road-force balancer, and have them show you which of them is causing the problem - could be either vertical [roundness] or horizontal ["straightness"] runout - anything much over 1.5 mm or so will cause problems in just about any BMW.

No shaking issues on mine... and I have Sport Package.... it's only been 3 weeks so far, but I'm still impressed with the solid feel.

I got my car back after two weeks, guess what, the problem is still ther and they screwed up the alignment now. My car is going right on a straight road. I do not know what to do now. Should I crack my head or their's. This is just not acceptable. I think I have a lemon. They should either give me a new car without this problem or my money back. I have had enough of this with them. This was the second time they tried to fix this problem.

ive been driving mine since may 20. no problems at all. 5000 miles. 330i sport with manual. the car is perfect. ive been measuring the tread depth and pleasantly surprised: .319 inch at 1900m - .312 inch at 3400m - .302 inch at 5000. still way early but its looking like 20K+ should be no problem. we'll see.

Same issue here!!! They rebalanced my tires for the simmy problem and after they fixed my alignment, the car now tracks right of center. I'm going to have they look at it again next week. -Chris |
