I think I'm making more enemies than friends on the VW forum
So I've had my Golf R for a few weeks now, and wanted to share some of the things I'm not so happy with on the VWGolf forum - think I've started a war! Oops.

LOL. Regret not getting a 135i?
Joking. I'm sure you'll develop a bond with the R after awhile, I know someone who has one and didn't like it as much as he thought he would..... Untill he gave APR a visit. |

if it's got a dsg then yes
I kind of know how you feel Cozza. I went from a R32 to a 135i. In general, my feeling of VW build quality vs BMW is a bit like a suzuki vs a honda in japanese terms. There is a noticeable refinement that you notice missing once you get over the R's unique performance traits. From the way it drives to the grade of plastic on the dash. The only input I can give with your issues is that I only drove the dsg in M mode. D are for people who doesn't care about driving and S is for people who doesn't know how to downshift and wants to hear the auto blip. Your other issues may be able to be sorted using the VAGCOM so keep searching the forums and get someone who's done it before. The only thing I miss about the R32 is the sound. Seems mostly civil and a lot of posters agreed with your feedback, it was well written and objectively put I thought.
Odd comment on page 3 about the 1M? I didn't get that bit (post #26). |

Feeling depressed? Why not slap a tricolor badge on the back of your new ride?
It worked for him. It worked for me. And it can work for you (Photo was taken two months ago, where I could not believe it - I just could not believe my eyes that two white baby M cars were in the same building.) |

Cozza, that post is great! Those things certainly don't show up on the test drive, but it's little things like that which bother most people. I would hate driving a car where I can't go windows down.
On a related note, I got taken by a Golf R in a straight line a few months ago. That thing was loud as fuck, and guy gave me a friendly wave afterwards. I was secretly disappointed. Ran into him AGAIN last week in my area (the car is unmistakable) and I got him good since I've got downpipes, V5 and new tyres in the meantime. Yeh, cool story bro I know.

Cozza,
Suggest you consider driving the DSG only in manual mode, with the stick and paddles, especially after your mods. I do with my R32 and other than delivery day, have not used D-mode not even when I'm cruising the freeways. S-mode needs the high revs and as you have found, is not suitable to normal driving but great if you need to blast someone off your mirrors. S-mode in launch control mode is quite something. The other issues have existed since MkV and there are lots of threads on them. Suggest you check out GolfMkV.com for some of the discussions. Re: the wipers, they are the worst. Even in its least-sensitive mode, the sensor is overly sensitive and the wipers do go crazy even in drizzles. I therefore do not use the sensor. Re: VW forums, including VWGolf can sometimes get nasty and feral very quickly. I put it down to the younger ownership of the GTIs, Rs etc. As I have noted previously, I like 3 things about my R32 - engine, DSG and exhaust note. I try to live with the other stuff, even after 4 years. With the mods you have planned, I hope the same 3 factors would take your mind off the other niggly stuff soon. |

If you still don't like it after 3 months piss it off and get a new car.

I saw a 1 series coupe with the 135/125 badge removed and replaced with a ///M badge at Westside BMW service check-in a while back. I asked if it was the real deal but they said at that stage none had been delivered... ergo wannabe. To cap it off when I was driving home from the airport the other night (after doing the M dynamic course on Phillip island) there was an obvious 325 Convert. (single exhaust) debadged and with a (very small) ///M3 badge on the boot lid. No bonnet buldge, no side vents, no quad exhaust... So sad. Immitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it also screams low self esteem.

Cozza, I don't think a lot of their comments were too bad. Didn't like the comment on how BMW focuses on luxury and VW on performance!
Majority of the issues you are having is due to your time with the 1er and what you got used to. You'll get over the majority of these things one you start forgetting the cool little things the 1er does so well. When I daily drove the 993 after the 130i was written off, I was too busy to enjoying myself to worry about the missing toys! You'll get used it too mate - just enjoy what you have now and appreciate what's awesome about that car and not what it doesn't have! |

Cozza, BMW do some things very well, I found it hard to walk away from some of the little features that you mention when I was looking to replace my 130i. In the end I didn't go too far! but Life's too short to be eating the same food each day, enjoy the R you'll probably only have it for 2-3 years and then move to the next experience. On a rainy day (which let's face it lately has been quite often) the R smashes most of our cars. I struggle to keep it straight from a set of lights (God bless Meth!!) Happy Days! |

The Golf R's can be modded quite easily apparently. A friend of mine was at the drags and with just tune and exhaust was doing low 13's in a manual. He said there are a few doing mid 12's with similar mods!

A few of us on these forums have come from GTIs/R32s it seems. I had a GIAC'd GTI and I enjoyed it to bits- the FWD was a killer though so the R's 4Mo should take care of that.
My 135 is a different beast, although I did get smoked the other day at the lights by a white R (it was wet) IMHO, 4WD is great for launches/drags and wet roads but everyday driving, I can't look past RWD. Enjoy the R. It'll have a few quirks but it's a good car in its own right. |

Cheers guys, I'm sure I'll get used to the R, and I look forward to catching up with a few of you in Melbourne for a drive day soon.
I didn't realise that DSG adjusts to your driving style over time, perhaps it will get used to me also! Tried driving in manual mode today, using the shifter half the time and the paddles the rest of the time. Paddles is the way to go but I need to mod them as they're too small to reach from the 10 & 2 driving position. Chylld, what colour did you go for?
