Thumbs up 3rd Generation RFT is phenomenal!

Hi,

Just got new shoes for my 125 coupé. My car had GoodYear 205/17/50 RFTs from factory. New shoes are Bridgestone's new Potenza S-001 3rd generation RFTs. they come a bit wider 225/17/45.
the ride quality has enormesly improved with this RFT technology, car is much much smother now. Love these tires.

here's a link so you can see the tires in action:

Congrats! Do you work for Bridgestone or BMW? Lol. That may be one of the first enthusiastic quips about RFTs.

Hahahaha. They feel good because they are new.

Going from old, worn out, cupped run flats to brand new run flats always feels like this.

I agree with you. While there is truth in the fact that new tires will provide an immediate improvement over worn, aged tires, the new line of Bridgestone's 3G run flat tires are very impressive.

When I test drove the Bridgestone Potenza RE960 RFT, I had a hard time telling the tire was a run flat tire. I had the opportuntiy to compare it head to head with non run flat tires on identical cars. The ride was nearly identical. I came away very impressed.

When BMW puts them on an M3 I'll consider them.

finally someone supporting my experience :-)
reading Bridgestone's press info, they stated that their 3rd G RFTs is 70 % softer than previous RFT's... anyway, nothing like a non RFT, no doubts about it. but for those like me who can't use a normal tire, having the 3g is definitely a good thing...

I thought they were good... until I swapped them out for Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs. Difference was immediately noticeable.

I agree. I'm on my 3rd set of RFT and this generation is a lot better. I have the same tyres on my Subaru in a non run flat and there is no difference in handling or ride.

You don't think that's the direction all tire technology is headed?

So Gill... I am curious... did you feel that the car with RFT had better steering response? That is the only area where I think a RFT ecels over a regular tire. In tire turn in and steering response. Espcially when turning into a turn. In all other areas a regular tire seems to be better than a RFT.

Maybe, but the immediate rationale is that it saves the manufacturer money (no spare is significant) not that they are better tires. I suspect that you will only see these in a high performance context when they are fully integrated into a wheel/suspension solution. Even then, weight is likely to remain an issue.

I'd be quite keen to try these new 3rd generation RFT's on my 135i, but, info from Bridgestone was that the OEM sizes for the 135i (and other 261M equipped M-Sport spec 1er's) were NOT going to be imported to the UK for sale here

not in UK! how come!!! here they got the 135 ones weeks before the rest of the other sizes.
amazing tires indeed. beautiful design, grip is outstanding, silent on high speed and I would say at least 50% smoother than my original RFTs.
it seems that bimmerpost site has tested a variation of Bridgestone's 3rd G RFTs, here's the article:

Good to hear the 3rd Gen is better, but run-flats are run-flats. The current technology will not allow them to compete 100% against non-run flat's regarding overall performance. That said, when and if the time comes it will change the tire industry forever and you'll see them on the M3.
