Brake Pads, whose using what?

Front: EBC Yellowstuff
Rear: OEM

Currently running 225/255 Starspecs on the OE wheels, but will be running a 255 square setup with Hankook RS3 for the 2014 season. I already need more pad as is, and that will only be exaggerated when I get more rubber under the car. Fade and cost are my biggest concerns. These will be track only pads, so they can be noisy as hell for all I care, as long as they work.

So, who is using what, and do you like your setup?

I'll admit I'm as surprised as anyone, but I've done two events now on OEM pads, one at a moderate braking track and the other at a heavy braking track, and I experienced zero fade. They are also free for the first four years so you can't beat the price. They do not have the greatest feel/modulation characteristics though, or immediate bite.

Based on what I've read, if I were going to a pure track pad I'd be leaning towards Hawk HT-10 or DTC-70s.

I melted a set of EBC Yellows at Laguna Seca in my RSX, so that was the last time I used them. Too bad too because they have excellent street manners other than dust. Probably a great autox pad but 30 minute sessions on a real circuit seemed to put too much heat to them in my experience.

Within two, one-day DE's I managed to put some heavy cracks in my front pads, to the point where I experienced severe pad compression, and I ultimately figured that one more event would deepen those cracks to the point of the pad material separating from the backing plate!
The EBC's have been okay, but for my application, I can tell that they put a lot more emphasis on the "street" part of the street/track hyrbid pad marketing.
I have read the aforementioned article several times over the years, but finding good pads for the 135i is a bit tricky, because we don't have quite as much stuff to choose from, compared to a lot of other makes/models.

You're definitely right on the lack of choices. I wish Pagid would make some pads that fit the 135i. They are brilliant on the Porsche I've driven.

Pagid makes the RS-29 for the 135i caliper. They are expensive and noisy as hell as far as Ive read ...

I use to run pagid RS29 and I can tell you I was surprised how quite they were on the street. my only complaint was modulation feel. they were a little tricky to modulate properly. otherwise highly recommended as I ran 4 track days and still was down to half padding. quality stuff for sure

I have also read this on more than one occasion regarding the newer RS29 material. I myself race RS19 fronts and RS7 rears, and they squeal more than trucks, but the longevity is as advertised - truly an endurance compound.

I ran Hawk HP+ on the first couple of track events I did in my Z4M.

I now run PFC06s (which are an older version of 08s) and they are an awesome pad. It is an endurance type pad, so the initial bite won't lock up tires and modulation is incredibly easy. I love them.

Of course, PFC doesn't have 08s for the 135i, but from looking at threads they seem to express interest in producing them or 135i calipers soon

im running rs3's and so far the pads are holding up fine. ive done a few track events and a hand full of AutoX's. but those Pagids are great pads for sure

blutattoo's comments mirror those of the 1M racers - Ferodo DS2500 may be excellent street pads, but are appalling track pads re crumbling and longevity.

I run Fer. 2.5k on street. They clank and squeak but good for light duty and AutoX. I run Carbotechs on the track. Good value and no issues at all, not too harsh on rotors unlike other track pads.

XP10/12? Do you have a dedicated set of rotors for the Carbotechs, or do you just swap pads and call it done? Worried about bedding/pad deposit/pad performance, as I killed a set of rotors with one track day on my old car by swapping pads and not resurfacing the rotors...

For carbotech you need to have dedicated rotors because of the compounds they use. Alternatively you can clean the rotors and rebed every time you switch.

I believe they are XP8/10, or 10 and 12s, I cannot recall..PM and I can get you the details. This setup was recommended for the 1er w/o R-comps…just moved up to Advan AO48s so may need dif pads now. I have only good things to about these pads. Less abrasive than other racing pads. I am on OEM rotors, plan to upgrade them when the time comes, so far they are fine.

I run Ferodo 2500s on the street, they squeak pretty bad after a high speed stop recently…been on for about 2k miles, my switch to CC, I like the 2500s for there versatility…(autoX and street use) prob. wouldn't use them at the track. I am not an expert just sharing my experience.

Joe they make the pads for back as well. not a big fan of mix and matching pads

To elaborate on this, really the only time you should be using different pads front to back is if you are intentionally trying to alter the brake bias of the car.

The most common approach is going slightly more aggressive in the rear to move the bias away from the front, where it is usually factory tuned to be. I've always wondered about brake temperature though, as I'd assume the rear brakes on a front engine car do not get as hot as the fronts, potentially making your more aggressive rears actually less effective. Haven't been able to find any clear information from experts on that particular topic though.

that is correct sir. only when you need to fine tune front to back bias. generally this is only meant for people who really know what they are doing. you don't want to find out you have the wrong bias on the track with a potentially dangerous situation
