Oil used by indies

Hi there
I'm looking to take the 1 for an oil and brake fluid change and I asked a couple of the indies recommended in the forums which oils the use. I was expecting Castrol Edge because the price difference against the others is not major...

One said:
Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W40
Castrol Super Dot 4

The other (quoted $100 more than the first one):
Valvoline Sympower 5w30.
ATE SL6 Dot 4.

I imagine asking them to use the oil I prefer would not be an uncommon ask, right?

Cheers

If i dont have time to do it myself, I usually provide the oil i want to put in. I leave it on the front seat and tell them to use that.

Don't put magnatec in your 135i, its a 'crappy' basic oil, you'll need a high performance 'synthetic' oil that's BMW LL01 approved such as the castrol edge.

These engines run hot, and put a lot of stress on the engine fluids a basic engine oil such as the magnatec could potentially gum up and prematurely degrade. An oil such as the castrol edge, being synthetically modified are specifically formulated for high performance engines which see high temps.

Yes if you BYO oil that should be fine, if not go to another mechanic instead!!

Even edge is crap in australia, the german stuff is good though (as in castrol edge actually from germany, yes it's different). They're a fairly poor quality synthetic, same as mobil 1.

For local oils i wouldn't look past penrite. Well priced, well made.

I've had a good experience with CE 0-40. Definitely recommend the 0-40 over the 5-40 for the extra protection, especially if you're modded.

In Australia (ie not below zero degree climates), those two oils will be identical.....
The first number of oil is the viscosity of oil in cold climates - which ensures you get sufficient oil flow at startup on frosty mornings.

Id stick to any oil with the 'BMW LL01' rating.
(not to be confused with the LL04 rating http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541486)

Personally, I would go with the 5W40 over a 0W40. The larger the spread between the numbers, the more likely the oil will have viscosity index improvers. Those are the first thing to break down in the oil, turning a 0W40 into a 0W30.

Have heard of people using the Mobil1 0W40 having this problem when having it checked by Blackstone.

And second vote for "make sure it has the LL-01 rating on it".

Pete@Advan has been using LiquiMoly e85 certified oil for the boys running ethanol. It's supposed protect the engine more from the corrosive nature of e85.

I unfortunately bought 10L of LiquiMoly at the recent Autobarn sale, but for anyone needing oil, SCA is having their Bathurst sale. $35 for Edge.
