New 1/2-Series APEX Wheel Fitment: 17x9.5 ET60 or 17x9 ET45

Hello everyone, I have a proposition for you all. The 135i has difficult wheel fitments, and this is a well understood issue. How many of you would be interested in a 1/2-series specific 17x9.5 ET60 rear wheel made by APEX, likely in the form of an ARC8? This would allow a plug and play fitment for 245/40-275/40 tires. This would be perfect for us race race and autocross guys who want the cheap tires afforded by 17" wheels. I personally would run a 255 on this fitment. For the drag/roll race guys, this would be plug and play for your 275/40 drag radials, and everything in between. The ARC8 are tough as nails, and can take the abuse of the race track, and the pot holes on the street, these are a quality wheel for the price. Rough numbers would be around 17-18# in weight, and likely at a cost of about $300/wheel, available in the typical silver, anthracite, black, and hyper black finishes. I have spoken with APEX and they are considering this, but want to see market interest in the idea before committing. If you are even slightly interested in this idea, please like and post in this thread so we have more information to show them.

Thanks,
- Jake

UPDATE, 5/27/15: APEX is listening, please vote in their new Skunkworks development website for your choice of new 17" track wheels!!!

ET60 is a little bit too much offset in my opinion - unless you want to use 275 drag tires.

I reckon it would be smarter to offer both 17x9.5 ET54 and 17x9.0 ET48 using the same face design. If you put a 12mm spacer on the ET48 wheel, you get ET36 which would fit on the front as part of an ideal square setup. 17x9.0 ET48 would also work as a rear rim with the 17x8.5 ET40 ARC-8 front rims previously sold by Apex.

I would buy a set of 4 17x9 +48 in heart beat. Slap a 15mm front spacer on and you have a square setup that can easily be rotated and should fit with 255-40-17s without too much drama.

Okay Gang, GREAT NEWS, but first, we need to hammer something out: I proposed a 17x9.5", but it seems an almost equal number of people are proposing a 17x9 ET45 or 48, which, when used with a 12 or 15 mil spacer, respectively, would allow an aggressive, yet rotatable setup for our cars.
If we press forward with this, we need to be cohesive: What does the 1/2-Series community want?

17x9 ET45/48
- Uses between 235-255 tires*
- Rear needs a good fender roll to clear fat tires, the ET48 obviously better than the 45 here.*
- Front needs at least -3* camber and a fender roll to clear fat tires*
- Needs 10/12mm spacer if ET45 or a 15mm spacer if ET48 to have fat tires clear the strut up front

OR

17x9.5" ET58/60
- A few mm lower offset than existing 18x9.5" ET62 ARC8 to eliminate possible fuel filler rubbing issue on right rear of car.
- Rear wheel fitment specific, would not fit up front.
- Plug and play for the rear, should fit stock camber, stock body, no fender mods, etc.
- Fits between 245/40 - 275/40 tires
- Drag/Straight line guys want these, max tire to quarter panel lip clearance, fits the fatty drag radials way better than the Koseis and gives more footprint with 9.5" width. A 275 on a 9.5" WILL have more footprint than a 275 on an 8.5".

What does the community want?

Now, WHY AM I EXCITED? I have just received a VERY exciting email from APEX V.P. of Sales, Steve Bailey. He was made aware of the pent up interest in aggressive 17" wheel fitments, and he said the company is watching closely. I was informed of some interesting developments in what the company plans to do, and it sounds very promising for us all.

So what now?

If you want either of these wheels, be loud, and be clear: Do you want these wheels, and which of the two do you want?

Poll added to thread, cast your vote on your preferred size, and speak up in here on which offsets are preferable:

On the 17x9 would you want ET45 or 48 or 50?

On the 17x9.5" would you want ET58ish or ET60?

Garage List

2013 Mini Cooper S  [0.00]
2002 Acura RSX  [0.00]
While I concur with folks' desire for a square setup, it simply isn't an ideal option for the 1 or 2 series. Any square setup that doesn't involve serious modification (camber and/or fender work) is going to sacrifice rear grip. There's simply a ton of room in the rear, and almost none up front. Even 255 square setups which require tons of camber and some fender rolling are giving up grip in the rear. Personally, I think if you want a square setup with spacers and fender mods and all that, there are already options out there on the market.

What Ginger seems to be proposing is a first ever 1 or 2-series specific, bolt on (no spacers or mods required) 17 inch offering. This, I'd be interested in because I like cheaper tires.

While I did vote for the 9.5, I would still buy the 9 inch offering if that is what apex offers .

Welcome to my life, I've proposed two options, either of which, would work excellently for me!

Apex can't even get me a set of their 18" 1-series offset wheels in over a year. Seems like a pipedream that they'd produce a whole new design in 1-series offsets. Cool if it happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you or anybody reading this.

I will point out that there is not much of a performance difference between a 9" and 9.5" rim for 255-40-17s. However, there are a few classes including STX in autocross where a 9" is the largest possible wheel so this seems to make more sense. A 9.5" is still not really wide enough for a 275 so it's a bit of a waste in that sense. But don't bother with a 17x9 +45, there are already several inexpensive options available in that size, either go higher offset (48 is good but I think really more like 52 would make the most sense seeing as the 9.5 is +63) to make it properly fit the rear or don't bother IMO.

Following this insight (forgot STX can only do 9", in STU, we have more leeway), if the 9" size ends up being popular choice, having an ET50 wheel would be largely plug and play in the rear, and a 15mm spacer to clear the strut up front.

Also where/ what are all these17x9 +45 options you speak of, in 5x120 and correct hub diameter? I'd love to hear. Most options are +42 offset or less.

TireRack has just released two new wheels under the Kosei name. KGolf already has a set, he's using a 12mm spacer up front.
