Found a key...can I have it reprogrammed as a third for our car?

I found a BMW key today (don't know if it's a comfort access key, or a standard key...is there a difference, or is it in the car's circuitry?). Anybody know if I can have the dealership re-program it for our car (obviously, the real metal "key" part won't work in the lock) as a third key?

How about you take it to the nearest dealership and they try and find out who it belongs to. Do you really need 3 when someone might be out one? They aren't cheap to replace.

the local dealership can probably identify the owner just by putting the key fob in their little scanner thing.

Even if it were possible do you think BMW would actually do it for you considering they can immediately identify who it belongs to by putting it in their key readers? I'm not sure this falls under their finders keepers losers weepers clause.

I noticed it in the lost and found box in the Superintendant's office of my building...according to him it's been in there for six+months...so any chance of finding the owner's long gone...and there are no modern BMWs that live here.

Upon closer look, it's the type of key that is for the non Comfort Access cars (ie: required to be inserted into the dashboard), as there is no battery access door as there are on my fobs, thus the rechargable battery of the lower-type of key. So, regardless of whether I could or should, it won't work anyway.

Dude, take the key to the dealer. They can find out the last-known address of the key's owner and at least try to contact him.

It's just the right thing to do.

So you lose your key and spend 6 months with just one set. Have you considered how much of a PITA it is?

Have you even considered the person who lost the key in your selfish decision-making process?

I'm going as far to say as in your thought process, you've become one of the people that make BMW drivers look like wankers.

If i lost my key, and a dealer called me one day 6 months later to tell me they have it, i would ask for the person who found it and send them a gift.

It's a crying shame to hear there are people like you around who are so completely and utterly so self-centred and unashamedly selfish.

Quit being a dick and take it to the nearest BMW dealer and have them ID the owner......did you think that your superintendent has a BMW key scanner and failed to get the owners ID?
This is what is wrong with people now days.....screw the guy that lost the key...how can I use it for myself.

I don't think the BMW dealer will recode it for you - so for your honor you should just drop it off and ask them to forward to a very grateful original owner.

The answer is no. Keys are made by the VIN. Reprogramming will do nothing but turn the key off.

dan so there's absolutely NO way you can get it swapped?

(I'm wondering in correlation to trade-in, etc)... no dealer will give me another 100 bucks if I throw in the second set of keys, if I could re-use it for another BMW, that'd be awesome

Correct. There is no way. Keys are individually designed for each VIN # so that only that key (or set of keys) can start the car.

Each VIN # has 10 available keys that can be used. Once all 10 keys have been ordered, the car requires a new locking system and reprogramming. The keys that the car comes with count as part of the 10.

Good info to know there Dan.

The OP needs to just take the key to his dealer and say he found it. They can find the owner and this whole debacle would be over.
