Completed Cut Out

I installed my cut out today and I'm pretty impressed by the results. My previous car (evo ix) was extremely loud, it made the driving experience great, but for daily driving it was horrible.

I didn't want to under go the same experience with my 1, so after some research I bought the BERK axle back exhaust for its civility. To be honest its a great exhaust but it's awfully quite. I wanted the exhaust the bark on command, leading to this great idea.

Parts used:
Race Ready 3in aluminum "y" pipe
Race Ready electric cut out
Race Ready remote control unit

Install:
1. Had a local exhaust shop weld in the cut out "y" pipe, so that was easy.
2. Wiring was super easy, attached the red wire to the battery (+), attached the black wire the (-) side of the battery.
3. I found a plastic tab in the trunk of the car, beneath the trunk the heat shield had a pre-made opening. I just ran the wires through that hole and connected everything up.

Things left to handle:
I'm having a custom turn down made so the hot exhaust doesn't ruin anything under the car. I also plan to wrap the brake lines in protective heat wrap and wrap the "cut out" portion in the DEI header wrap to help with the heat as well.

Let me know what you think.

Why wouldn't you put the cutout on BEFORE the muffler on the Y pipe? A lot of people do straight pipes over the rear muffler and its not THAT loud. No cats/mufflers is crazy though...

it is on before the muffler, the N55 only has one muffler, and its in the rear section. Currently i'm running the cat and that little resonator in the mid section

Epic win even though I thought it was going to be further upstream. It sounds great but needs moar loud. Time to take those cats out!

Cut outs are boss! Clean install, too. If you want an easy way of determining whether it's open or closed, just wire in an LED

Wait now I'm confused. Does the N54 motor have the same setup with just a resonator and rear muffler like the N55? That could totally change my plans...I have been looking for a midpipe to put the cutout before what I thought was the muffler (on the mid) so that the cutout would bypass all obstructions. If it's a resonator though, I might just put the cutout on the rear section, it's easier to find/replace anyways.

Midpipes on the N54 has a cat and resonator, Midpipes on the N55 just has a resonator.

Finally, someone did it! About six months ago I ran around with the axle-back section off for the hell of it (Yes, I'm still a child who likes cars that go vroom-vroom) and loved the way it sounded.

I was wondering when someone was going to do this, and no it's done! I bet you've started a new trend, buddy.

I appreciate it...I finally found a rear muffler to play around with. Toying with the idea of just gutting it, but depending on how loud it is I will probably end up doing a cut out like yours, but with the stock muffler.

If I may ask, what made you go with race ready? I have been looking for a decent cut out for a while around the $200 range, but have been hesitant because I read occasional reviews of them not sealing properly and/or just breaking down after a few months.

To my knowledge Race Ready offers the only plug and play remote controlled cut out. Every other company requests you send the cut out and remote unit to them for calibration.

The cut out is so far down stream if it leaks a little it won't effect anything in the cabin. I plan to tear everything apart and use a high temp rtv sealant in the near future.

If you ever get a downpipe that cutout is gonna be hilariously loud I bet. I know my full Berk exhaust on my N54 def. 'barks on command' even with stock downpipes, you can hear my car coming from 15-20 houses away and on another street.

A long while back I remember reading that a vendor was installing DPs on the car and turned it on to see how loud it would be without an actual exhaust in place. It was surprisingly quiet! So i'm not sure that the cutout will be TOO too loud. Ridiculously loud, yes. Earth-shatteringly loud? Probably not.. But only OP knows for sure. Post videos!!

I agree...exhaust running through the turbos effectively acts as a muffler. Not a big one, but it definitely makes it quieter than a car with open headers.

Damn, I thought mine was loud with straight pipes all the way back to the BMW muffler... this thing is going to scream. Onefastman has straight pipes on his N54 all the way back and it's so loud if I'm driving behind him I can't hear my car.

Video please
