gearbox issue

Hi
My car (1m) is currently sitting at around 11500miles on the clock and ive recently started having problems with the gearbox. I'm struggling, at times, to find 3rd on up and down shifts. It feels like its just not engaging and I have to let it settle then go again, it mostly happens below 4000rpm when driving normal. Sometimes it engages no problem.
It happened in 4th gear the other day too.

Could it be due fluid change? Could the gearbox be on its way out?

The car has evolve stage 3 tune - 415bhp & 475ft/lbs

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

David

The car is due its 2 year service in November but I think il get it done mid September. Im sure the gearbox oil is changed at that service interval?

It is very weird, I thought maybe the clutch was starting to go but there is no noticeable slippage.

Maybe synchro?

Does it grind when you want to change gears? Or does it just not want to go into gear. ?

You may have a clutch or shifter linkage or broken motor/trans mount causing the shift linkage not to line up. Any play in your shifter?

First step would be fresh fluid, and the correct fluid! MTF-LT-5 @~1.2Liters.

It just wont go in unless i really push push it, its like theres a notch in the gear and sometimes it does crunch. Its only happened once in 4th. Sometimes though its as smooth as butter and it never happens when im driving fast.

Il have my mates garage check all the items you have listed and send some feedback on that. Thanks very much for the heads up.

I would get the tune removed but its also had FMIC upgrade, Full exhaust so they could just use that against me.

I think il get the fluid changed asap and see what effect that has. Its so annoying.

Dealership isn't going to care if you have FMIC and exhaust when it comes to the tranny.

I got the FBO PTF st.2 and around 600+Nm of torque, so my clutch can't handle this torque some times while switching from 3 to 4 gear on the high RPM.
The solution is to get the Spec st.3+ clutch which handles arounf 900Nm.

Spoke to the garage today and they are saying that the synchro is the problem. So, it looks as though a gearbox rebuild or replacement may be needed.

If I remove the stage 3tune will the dealer still be able tell that I had a stage 3 tune?
Will I be ok claiming warranty even though the exhaust and intercooler have been changed?

Unless defective, synchros usually don't fail as a result of torque, but as a result of inartful shifting.

That may be true but the synchro on this is not due to poor shifting it just started happening and since it started becoming difficult to engage 3rd, at times, its maybe crunched in twice. If it feels like its not going to go in I dont force it I let it go back to the centre then go again.

Can I just add too that Imran at Evolve has been a great help with helping me remove the stage 3 tune and putting ecu back to stock. Hopefully the exhaust, intercooler won't void the warranty!?

You'll be fine. As long as the tune is gone BMW isn't going to care about cooling and exhaust. If you are worried call up your service advisor and ask him before taking it in.

Synchros going are often driver related but it's always possible something was wrong from the factory too. BMW will fix the first time for free under warranty.
