Brake question

I am pretty sure I have a rock banging around behind my left rear rotor. I can not see any way to remove the dust shield without removing the rotor . . . am I missing something?

If I do need to remove the rotor, any advice for the 16mm bolts that hold the rotor bracket? They are really seized up and there isn't room to get a good breaker bar in there. No luck with a rubber mallet yet.

I have heard that PB blaster can help, but I don't have any around. Any reason not to spray some WD40 on them?

Usually the rock works its way loose and falls out.

Have you tried driving in reverse? Often that will do it.

Yes, several times. I am getting impatient with it and want to make sure its not making a mess of the back side of the rotor.

In all my pounding on the rotor, the pebble fell out, all quiet now.

I am still wanting to remove the rotor and take a look, more just to prove to myself that I CAN remove the rotor. It does NOT was to come off!

I have removed the two hex bolts that hold it in place, and have sprayed it with PB blaster (went and got some) twice, several minuted of pounding with a pretty well weighted rubber mallet, still no luck. I am going to give the PB blaster an hour to penetrate then try again.

Anyone else had this much trouble? Any suggestions?

Yes, thanks.

I finally used a regular hammer, which provided more shock, and it broke loose after about 5 or 6 whacks. I watched a DIY video on the e90 forum, which gave me a little more confidence to hit it harder with something other than a rubber mallet. That was really all it took.

My RX8 rotors never needed any encouraging to separate from the hub once the snub bolts were out, so this was an unexpected challenge.

All good now . . .
