I was under the impression that kickdown is for automatics. when you hit the pedal all the way down it will cause the car to "kickdown" to a lower gear and then you will take off! am i wrong?

You are correct. I had an auto in my last BMW. As you press the pedal down all the way, there is a slight resistance point. If you press down beyond that point, the car with go into a lower gear to improve acceleration, even if driving in DS or "manual" modes. |

Isn't there a little button there below the gas pedal that is pushed when you floor it? I thought the button is what activates kickdown mode. I don't have an auto, so I can't check.

Not sure about a button, and I don't have the car anymore to check, but I know I could always feel that point in the pedal when I got to it. Maybe what I was feeling was resistance from a button being pushed?

There's a switch under the gas pedal that is pressed when you floor it. (I don't have an auto right now either, but that's the way BMWs have been in the past, and the one I test drove felt the same.) |

IIRC, it was also the method of causing a shift from overdrive to direct back when some MT equipped cars had the OD option. Tom |
