Do our 1's come with a factory alarm system?

Just wondering, I am reading the 1 manual and it mentions it but someone had said here that they did not think they did come with an alarm?

No. You have to buy it separately and have it installed by the dealer. It costs $300-$400 with install.

Its a pretty simple install. Its already pre-wired. You do have to have it activated by the dealer though.

Wow? That seems like a fairly glaring oversight. No alarm on a BMW? Hmm.

I agree. Seems stupid not to install it at the factory or at the very least offer it as a factory install options.

Opinions can vary, but I believe there is no point in having an alarm. It just makes chirping noises. Flashing lights and the red clown nose on the rear view mirror can be activated by your dealer without an alarm.

BMWs come with EWS modules that do not allow the car to be stolen unless the key is inside the ignition. Not just any 1 series key, that key coded to that car. This is why you cannot buy a BMW key on eBay, it must come from BMW NA coded to your VIN. This means that your car isn't going anywhere unless it's on the flatbed of a truck.

Also, on a side note, comfort access users have to have 1 hour of key programming when they order a new key.

What about car insurance premiums? I have called around for quotes and they want to know what type of alarm the car has. Without it I will have to pay more for insurance according to them. Then what???

The "clown nose" is standard I believe on all 2000+ BMWs. I have a base model E46 (no ZSP, no ZPP, no ZHP) and it came with one.

Whatever the dealer charges  Is the key has a warranty issue, you're in the clear. If you just want a spare key, I'd imagine somewhere in the $100 range

E90s don't have standard alarms, either.

I seriously see no point in an alarm system. They're just ignored nowadays. I could understand LoJack or something, but the basic alarm is useless.

I would just be happy with the blinking light! Thats the best part of the alarm anyways.

You go to a friends house for dinner and you hear an alarm go off in his drive way...

I agree, I think they are FAR from useless. They might not take the car, but they can damn sure try and take everything inside it. At least with honking they know the clock is ticking and they just can't sit there after they bash the window and go to town.

I wouldn't go as far as say that they are useless, but I think that they are unneccesary on a BMW. With an alarm they have to break the window for it to go off so either way the car is broken in to. The car, theoretically, can't be stolen with 128b encryption and I don't leave anything of value sitting exposed in the car, so I wouldn't gain from an alarm.

I forgot to add that my insurance co. doesn't give discounts for alarms.

People may ignore alarms for the most part and modern cars may be practically impossible to steal. However, as others have pointed out, alarms do help prevent the smash and grab. Although the blinking light signaling the possibility of an alarm might be enough of a deterrent as well. Provided of course your dealer will actually turn it on for you.

WOW interesting. My insurance has 4 alarm catagories. With a better discount for the each that is better. I think I will still get the noise maker. $500 cash a few months after getting one.

Usually insurance companies give discounts for immobilizers.
