I'm with BimmerEngineer, on this thread. The N55 is a good engine it just has not made as much power as a N54 as of yet. My German flash tunner Marcel, told me that the N55 is really only safe until: Stage II: 360 PS and 500 Nm. He does not reccomend any higher oitputs - because of the weaker internal engine parts(pistons & crankshaft) Even though it is possible to get close to 400 PS out of a N55, he does not reccomend it.

I mentioned this in my N54 German flash tune:

I will put a 2JZ with NOS in my 135 and show ALL OF YOU! Then convert it to a single turbo to show all of you again! Then I will eat some Cheeto's.

I've personally seen the N55 put down 360whp with almost 420wtq. Makarov88 did Bavarian Exclusive's Dyno Challenge back in April and the runs were done on a Dyno Jet. And that was without meth. Vishnue Tune, Downpipe, and Catback ONLY. Looks like we're proving those BMW techs wrong. Why are you getting so fired up by the N55 anyway?

And kudos to the guys at Vishnu!

I posted this in another thread, but I thought it was an interesting analysis. I think a lot of people are underestimating the N55...here is the one thing I want to point out.

For about 95% of people who modify a 1 series we are not really comfortable to going over the power levels where the N54 will surpass the N55. The N55 is easily capable of 360whp as we have all seen...but due to the different engine in my opinion that 360whp goes a lot farther. I would be willing to bet that a 360whp N55 is just as fast as a 380whp N54.

Now granted there are a lot of variables, but this is the closest thing to a tune on tune test I could find.

Please NOTE that the N55 is running less PSI, and is down a FMIC plus a Cat back exhaust.

Below are two dyno charts

Chart 1
2008 E90 335i
AMS Intercooler
AMS Catback Exhaust
VK Downpipes
CP-E Charge pipe/Tial BOV
DCI
3 Runs with PROcede v4 Autotuning 100 octane (19psi)
3 Runs with JB3 dynos on Map 7 on Pump Gas. (15-16psi)

Chart 2
N55 135 w/7DTC
91oct
Vishnu Procede v5
Vishnu DP
Vishnu Large charge pipe
Cat-back
No Intercooler
No Cat back exhaust

Now these cars are the closest I could find to similar mods. Obviously the N54 running 100 octane is going to make a huge difference. Please note that the N55 is running less than 15psi.

Chart 1
3.0 - 220
3.5 - 250
4.0 - 280
4.5 - 320
5.0 - 360
5.5 - 380
6.0 - 380

Chart 2
3.0 - 230 (+10)
3.5 - 260 (+10)
4.0 - 295 (+15)
4.5 - 350 (+30)
5.0 - 360 (+0)
5.5 - 355 (-25)
6.0 - 340 (-40)

So even though the JB3 is running more more psi and pulling 25 more peak HP..throughout the RPM band the N55 holds its ground all the way until the last 1000 RPM's. I just think that is worth noting. Now put that together with the DCT.
