A mid pipe replacement will do the trick. Some of the options are Berk Technology or Mad Dad.

Does swapping the mid pipe get rid of the secondary cat? Can it be swapped and leave the stock muffler?

if you go with the N55 mids yes you are deleting the secondary cats and retaining the resonator. OEM rear section bolts on no problem. its a great setup if you dont want to go louder or uber loud.

Being fairly new to any kind of serious car handywork, how hard is it to swap the N54 mids for N55? There isn't a handy guide by chance is there?

I was trying to avoid messing with the emissions system. I realize the secondary cat is after the last sensor, but if that is what it takes, I may do it.

It totally drones. Between 2.X and 3k rpm. I used to think the same way as you guys, "What are they talking about?". All it took was driving with the HK off and I could hear it for myself.

On the plus side, if it sounds that annoying inside, I imagine it must sound great outside! hahah

What can of worms? You keep coming back to a thread that is seeking a solution to the drone that does exist on this car. If it doesn't bother you great move on.

I agree entirely with you, which is why I suggested for the other poster to not bring up whether he believes there is a drone or not...to avoid triggering responses such as the one you just provided. I forgot to unsubscribe since the last time I posted here, which is why I received the email from when s/he posted.

By the way, how's the progress on your solution? Just curious.

EDIT: When I said I agree, I meant the part in bold, as I do not believe my car drones. But I do respect and admire someone's dedication to finding solutions.

Well maybe some do and some don't......... but mine sure as hell does!
.... and I am going to install the N55 midpipe this week to see how it does re reducing "Du Drone". I might get a few more horses and a little more sound also... we shall soon see !

So, if that's the case the secondary cats section is responsible for the drone? Ie, no drone on the akra when the valve's closed?

Today I installed the N55 midpipes replacement for the N54. I have only driven it for 15 miles, but it SURE helped reduce the Drone! I would say it is 80% gone, and is in a very reduced rpm range. The only place I can hear it is under light load between 2600-2800 rpm-- and even at that range it sounds much better than before-- i.e. a nicer sound.

THe whole system is a "little" deeper/ louder, but only slightly.

I can't comment re any HP /torque changes.
