OT : X5 xdrive35d or xDrive4.8?

Hi all....I need to change the E53 3.0L as the lease is running out and I am looking at the 35d. The 4.8L V8 is also under consideration but the 18L/100km is a bit of a turn off.

There are a few X5 drivers as well as others who have driven both here so I'd value some opinions.

BTW I drove the X5M and unfortunately it didn't sizzle for me. I guess I unfairly expected a kick in the guts like the M3 which I know is unreasonable.

I drove an X6 xDrive5.0 for the feel of the TT 4.4 V8 that's coming to the X5 in the LCI but somehow I feel the 35d had more squirt off the line. The X5 xDrive5.0 doesn't make an appearance until late this year though.......

Many thanks

What about the 5er GT instead? Also, the LCI is coming up very soon.

35d becomes a 40d when the LCI arrives.

X5M doesn't kick in the guts like M3? You sure you drove the right car? Lol. The X5M has so much torque and the turbo rush is much more than the push in an M3. M3 had lots of power but little torque, so I can't understand your comment. A friend who had a E90 and X5M and now a M3 Edition and X5M will tell you how much more of a rush the X5 is because of the torque. Are you talking about off the line maybe? For some reason they have tune it to have some lag at take off for both the V8 tt. But put it in MDM especially in manual mode and it's brutal!

Amk2912, mum has the 3.5d and she loves it and I do too. Done about 15,000kms and hasn't missed a beat! But she's now fascinated by my work car - Q5 3.0TDI.

Way, you seem very very excited waiting for your X5M!

I would personally wait for the LCI, especially the M Sport version. The current sport version is a bit of a let down, the new one is much better and what one would expect of a sport model. In terms of engine when spending 6 figures it is petrol all the way for me. However if you're not too fussed then it would be a toss between the 50i and 40d. I would stay clear of the 48i as this engine varient is not long for this world affecting resale hugely. The 48i is really gutless, 35d beats it for midrange and overtaking oomph. Also claimed 0-100 for the 48i is way off. I am seeing mostly over 8 secs, so it's telling you that 2 tonnes is still too much for this engine. A good compromise if you were considering 50i vs X5M is to reflash the 50i and you have 500+ hp and a soundtrack that really puts the X5M to shame. I am still on the fence myself about the X5M.

It'll still be the same engine though.

The one I'm looking at has the M-sport innovation pack. It also has the HDD-based iDrive, which is mandatory for me. What impressed me was the 35d's squirt off the line compared to the 4.4 TT (albeit in an X6).

This would be my first foray into diesel but you can't argue with the numbers!

Waiting? I've had it for a couple of months. Which is why I know exactly what the car is like having done 2000km from it.

I am very very excited waiting for my new car though, but it will be months before it arrives!

WAY - what sort of fuel consumption are you averaging?

Don't be fool by off the line acceleration. It's just pedal tuning there. The first cm of the throttle on both the V8TT does nothing! What about the 35i btw? The N55 engine will be awesome with a tune!

19litre/100km at the moment. More city driving than freeway. It's only slightly worst than my C63. Who cares about fuel consumption anyway.

If you're getting 19, my wife (main driver) would be getting 25!

Our X5 averages 20,000 km a year - that's a lot of school runs and after school activities - mostly in heavy traffic. That's the joy of living 20km from school!

I had thought about the 35i but I can't wait that long. Waiting 5 months for the 135i was blue murder.

Seems I'm a bit late on the uptake then!

Assuming none of the excitement has wained?

What's the next toy??

The car is no good in heavy traffic from a fuel consumption perspective lol. Diesel it is then?

To be honest I was never that excited about the X5M. It is our big family car, so nothing to be overly excited about. BUT, since picking it up, I have been very very impressed with what it can do given the size and weight! It's an amazing car. Really is.

As for the next toy, going back to a brand I am familiar with. It will look exactly like this, but with steering wheel on the right side haha.

Same as where my kid sits on my bikes - on the seat, stationary. Lol. That's why it's called a toy. I have enough cars to not worry about that issue.

Nice choice, way. Sounds like its going to be a good performer and looks great I think. I'm wondering about moving to a cayman S myself.

Cayman S is a very good car! Here is one I prepared earlier, but obviously not the new update model as this was a few years back. Anyway, no more Porsche discussion as AMK wants to know about X5, not Porsches!

Way, you are indeed a lucky man! Spyder looks amazing, was watching review of it pitted against a Tesla Roadster Sport and they raved on about it's steering, which is what I love about the Cayman S, crazy direct. A lighter Boxster with Cayman S engine is definitely a recipe for a delicious toy! My personal preference will always be with the Cayman I think, in love with that thing!

Amk, sounds like the 35d is the car for you sir! Think it'll tick all the boxes and it pretty damn easy to live with too.
