I understand what you mean about them often times hide the detail of wheels, but black (and gunmetal) wheels are here to stay. Be happy that there are so many options.

Anyone feel this way about black cars?

I've bit my tongue on asking this question, but I have to ask as I am genuinely interested... What is the draw to the black car thing? I just don't get it.

95% of the time I see someone with a black car and they remind me of Ford Model T, an old car that could be had in any colour so long as it is black. To me they just look like an unfinished car with a black primer coating that is waiting to be painted in a bright colour. The lack of contrast makes it very difficult to appreciate the design of the car that many of you buy for mucho $$$$. No sarcasm intended but can anyone explain what I might be missing?

As popular as black wheels may be, I still really like the look 👍

I had them on my Lotus and I think they worked (came with them). That particular car looked quite odd with silver wheels. As a general rule, black wheels definitely cheapen the look of a car, unless they came that way from the factory.

I feel the same way and get bashed for it all the time. Me and a buddy of mine got in an argument about it so he sent me a bunch of pics of Porsches (he's a HUGE Porsche whore) with OEM black wheels asking me "Do you think THIS looks like crap, too!?" (as though I was simply just defying GOD) and I kept responding "Yes." Pissied him off REAL bad. IDC, just 'cause it's OEM on an expensive sports car, doesn't mean that it's NOT a part of a terrible fad. I will say, though, there are SOME cars it does look good on...

I think black looks good on high end exotics.. Or offroad trucks in a way. Like an Aventador looks good with black wheels. But everything else? Cheapens it imo.

Well done sir! It looks so much better (though I personally like the wheel design of the original wheels a lot).

It all depends on the exterior color combination.

Mostly black wheels can look good as a complement to dark exteriors (black, dark blue), or as a contrasting color to bright exterior paints (orange, red, neon green). Exotics tend to be paired with bold bright exterior paints, thus the frequent pairing with dark wheels:

Color preferences are highly personal.
Whatever makes you happy!

Looking at that P1, I'm thinking that in addition to the color- the super aggressive styling and massive rotors/painted calipers play a big part in them working on supercars as well.

What a fantastic car you have. That car is honestly one of the few cars to come along in recent years that I'd like to own. I'd take it anyday over the stuff BMW is coming up with now. Absolutely gorgeous.

Put the black wheels back on though, they made the car look expensive and not so pedestrian as the silver wheels.

Just like any other style, works on some cars & not on others. My Miata is black & I have tinted all the lights & black wheels. I like it. My car. Did it for me, not for anyone else.

When I see black wheels I think of an old police car or ghetto hooptie I can't stand the look and I can't wait until it's over. And I think it's on the back end of it's lifecyle now.

But I used to do autocrossing and the beginning of the black wheel fad has it's genesis with the hard core racers. Why? Because baked on brake dust didn't look so bad. With enough heat, the brake dust is virtually impossible to remove so why bother with bright silver wheels? The spectators and wannabe's saw the hard core racers with their black wheels and thought it was cool. Plus, it was a kind of a "grunge" rejection of the chrome 22" fad.

I do think black wheels with a silver lip looks ok in some situations like a black car or red/white for some contrast. The bright lip prevents the wheels from looking like you lost your hubcaps and can't afford replacements.

In pertinence to the thread, I painted my stock wheels on the 128i black. Not because I'm super cool, but I just got tired of wiping off brake dust every freaking day. I mean, if it weren't that bad, I would have left them silver, but laziness prevails yet again.

Don't forget the "Time Attack" fad of the mid-2000s.
Died out real quick. Gotta admit though, during that time, it looked pretty good.

Like that huracan above, sometimes it just works.

On most gray cars I think black is the best wheel color

My preference is dark gunmetal wheels to provide contrast but not too much or too little (say if your car is white or black). When you have gunmetal paired with gray car color, there's not enough contrast.

Wheels have been silver for as long as I can remember so I went with black wheels. I absolutely love them.

But most cars look better without black wheels.

Alright, haters, I'm about to pick up a Valencia Orange X1. Silver and chrome will have no place whatsoever on this vehicle. What color should the wheels be? Black? Anthracite? Gunmetal?

I am also not a big fan of black wheels. They hide the spoke design and look like steelies from a distance or while in motion. I'm a big fan of traditional silver or slightly darker shades of silver on wheels. They stand the test of time and always provide a clean look.
