7k miles?
In metric im used to maximum 7-8k KM, premature oil changes FTW. Roughtly works out once before Summer and once before Winter

I try and stick to 5k but it's gone to 6 a few times.

I would it's also important to state your country or state because of air temps and altitude.

Currently BMW oem, but already bought mobil for the next 2 oil changes.

I'm making one extra oil change in between recommended interval.

This roughly makes it 7.5k miles

so I got the difference between 0 and 5 (0 being thinner which is better to reduce wear and tear on start ups) but what's the main difference between 0w-40 and 0w-30?

It means when your oil is at operating temperatures, one oil is thicker (more viscous) than the other oil (40 > 30).

thanks. that being said, whats the ideal oil for an environment which usually doesn't go below 5 degrees C in winter and exceeds 34 degrees C in summer?

BMW has already determined that for your engine. You can use either a 0W-30, 5W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40. They all will work for your car and protect it well. There is no "ideal" oil. Just make sure to use a LL-01 approved oil.

+1. I'm a strong believer in frequent oil changes(strictly 5k mile changes). Oil is cheap, engines are not.

When i track my car i plan on moving that down to 3k miles.

Depending on temperatures and length of time on the track, why not change after every track event?

Indeed.

Really depends on what temps he is getting while on track. Generally HPDEs don't subject cars to that much wear. Oil analysis would be the best route.

Mostly BMW 3w50 but the price went through the roof.

Castrol 0w40 LL4 came to the rescue.

I'd probably change mine after every weekend/event. Generally because i'd have it WOT literally all the time.

My realistic goal for my car is to be a drift missile when it's retired from DD duty(150k miles<). I'll gut the interior and every shred of weight i don't need, throw in a couple bucket seats, starting screwing with more steering lock and throw an LSD in. Then i'll just fix and upgrade things as they wear out and break

It'll also of course see track days and autocross. she will be beaten like a red headed step child when i buy another daily in a few years.

LL04 is not for your car, change it.

Interestingly our local BMW indy uses bulk oil from a 45 gallon drum (forget the name) but its LL04. He's been fixing BMWs for 38 years.

LL4 can be also used where LL1 is spec'd. But not the other way around!

LL1 = USA (high sulfur fuels)
LL4 = Europe (low sulfur fuels)

I think the biggest difference with the LL-04 oil is that it is a low SAPS/low ash oil, so it has a lower starting TBN. Therefore, it will not last as long as an LL-01 oil (when used with higher sulfur/ethanol fuels) and the OCI should be much shorter.

It is also geared towards Diesel engines with particulate filters, so as not to clog them up (like a high SAPS/high ash oil would).

When I lived in Greece, I used olive oil, extra Virgin.

The green stuff from a village in Crete. It comes delivered to my house by donkey.

But since I'm back in the US now castrol edge 5w30

But I tried castrol 0w40 European formula my last oil change about 2 weeks ago and I think the car runs a little harsher at least when idling it seems to have a more distinct vibration and almost a metallic sound.

Anyone experience something similar?

I think I'm going to switch back to castrol 5w30 this weekend.

Also I add a small bottle of liquimoly anti friction usually during the oil change or a week or two after when I go to an auto parts store (I think one bottle is supposed to be for 5 liters or oil but I found it does the job for 6 and change.
