6MT abuse threshold
Hey there,
I just got my 6MT 128i a few days ago, and it is actually the first manual car I have ever owned. Although I feel very confidant on the road now, the drive home from the dealership was a little bit interesting. My biggest concern is that as I was trying to downshift a few times, I did not fully depress the clutch, and I got a rough little grinding noise that I reacted to by putting the car in neutral, rather than forcing it into gear, and then starting the shift over again or just coasting in neutral to a stop. My 1er only has 30K miles on it, and I don't anticipate making that same mistake again after the few times it happened over the couple days getting used to a manual, but I just want to get y'alls opinion on how much damage I may have caused to the clutch/syncros and how long I should expect borh to last. Let me know your opinion! |

Should be fine... Everyone misses a shift now and then.

Nah don't worry about it. I learned to drive manual in my 128i too, 40k miles later it still feels like new

Our transmission is a Getrag Type 1, a very well made, reliable trans. Very unlikely you've done it any harm. You might consider getting rid of the clutch delay valve for a better clutch feel (small, easy job) and changing your trans. fluid every 30 k. or so will ensure a long trans. life. BMW will tell you it's a lifetime fill. You can believe that if you want but I'm going with a Mike Miller type schedule as I'm keeping this car till the fat lady sings.
