Tire Pressure Sensors

My car is at the dealer as I write this (airbag recall and a four-wheel alignment). I asked my SA about tire pressure sensors... my car was built in July 2010 and I have to believe it's about time? He responded that they rarely see them fail, and that they get replaced only as they fail (one at a time, nobody proactively does these as they last a very long time and cost to do them all is something like $900).

Does that make any sense at all?

Funny thing is that if you go to a place like Discount Tire they would tell you that TPS fail all the time (they don't ), and they won't mount tires for you without getting the proper rebuild or replacement kit....

Sad really, that very conversation ended my very long relationship with the local DT shop...

Visited various tire shops and I've never heard any of them say the TPMS sensors fail all the time. I do hear them talk about a rebuild kit which consists of gaskets/o-rings and such. Many times people (including myself) just go along with it as it's only a nominal fee (a few dollars per wheel).

But if the TPMS does fail which I think is typically due to the battery going dead, you can get replacements for much less than the $900 being quoted by the dealership. If I recall correctly, I got a set of 4 TPMS sensors from Tire Rack for about $50 each when I ordered my winter tires. The sensors have been working flawlessly for 3 to 4 years now.

I had a rep at the Discount by my old house in Southlake tell me my new (12k miles on it) JX35 might need new tires. I will not go back to that location. Most Discount tires give far better customer service.

No, no. I bought a set of style 261s and the sensors worked perfect after puuting the rims on the car

My 2010 Mazda CX-7 lost two sensors within 4 months. Not because the sensor failed, but the valve stem broke. One caused a slow leak and the other failed at highway speed causing a major tire failure. Broke probably due to cheap manufacturing and road salt corrosion.

A bit off-topic, but if your issue is not the sensor, but just the valve stem, then there is a kit that has everything you need to drill, tap, and install a new valve stem extension. You can get it from Amazon here:

I did it on my Prius, and it worked great. I didn't even have to remove the wheel. All you need is access to compressed air to re-inflate the tire. It wasn't the cost of a sensor that worried me, it was the cost of having the sensor coded to the car.

It's kind of been mentioned but yep street price is no more than $200. For 1-ers there were 2 types, depending on your manufacture date. Roughly before and after 2011 but you'd want to verify that if you were buying them.

Replacement cost should be a little more, but not much more, than the cost of remounting and rebalancing a tire.

If they go bad very often you sure don't hear about it here. Just people looking for extra sets for adding to snow tires or something similar.
