Perhaps you don't fit the mid-life crisis stereotype. Just be good natured about it and move on. No need to be a take a poke at BWM owners in a BMW forum. Nobody here thinks the Vette isn't a world-class sports car.

The 1-series is a sports coupe that can outperform many sports cars, especially older sports cars. I think this list of lap times gives a good perspective of the 1-series' performance capability: http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/laguna_seca.html

I was only taking a poke at "Daft Auto" not BMW owners and of course I am one and have loved my BMW's. I just hate stupid stereotypes. And you are right, it is a world class sports car.

Spot on attitude. Glad to see you can take a joke and not get defensive like every Corvette owner does.

The Mazda 6 vs Mazdaspeed 6 is not an accurate comparison at all, mazdaspeed 6 has a LSD, and sport suspension not found in the 'base' version. The 135i and 128i both don't have a LSD and I don't think the 128i sport suspension significantly differs from the 135i (correct me if i'm wrong). My first season autocrossing, i and a 135i owner often got very similar times, sometimes i would beat him, he thought i had the better car for what we were doing (i know this isn't true, since the 135i is classed higher), but i never got the sense the 128i was the non-sport version of the 1 series.

I don't even know if there's a true "official" definition of what sports car entails but I tend to agree from an enthusiasts' POV, it's usually reserved for a 2 seater. For the general public I can see why someone would consider any BWM a sports car.

Me personally, if I had to choose I'd call it a sporty coupe.

Get off your high horse, hp isn't everything and some would argue the inline 6 in the 128 makes it one of the last true BMW driver's car.

My horse broke a leg and I had to shoot him. Apologies (as I said before) if I offended anyone.

Is my wife's Miata a sports car or a little car with a lot of fun built in?

As for the Speed6 vs Mazda 6 I think it's a fair comparison. Yes, they built in an engine swap (DIrect Injection turbo 4, AWD via a Haldex unit, (no LSD but up to 50/50 split drive front to back, which was basically a front driver most of the time), bigger brakes, and a clutch that would break your leg, but most of the bones were still there. A good platform to build upon is the key. Dumping a big engine into a chassis that can't handle the weight HP or torque isn't really a performance anything, unless you go in a straight line all the time.

This perspective is mostly because its autocross. The biggest difference between the 128 and the 135 is the power, but at such low speeds that autocross is comprised of, the 135i can't use its advantage... it just spins the tires. After that the upgraded brakes and mildly upgraded suspension don't help much. I can see how if the 135i owner wasn't very experienced, the tire spin could lead to a worse time than your 128i

The lighter weight of the 128i can be an advantage in AX as well.

Also, there is no difference between the 135i sport suspension and the 128i sport suspension.

The 5MT TKO600's are pretty hard to beat for handling power.

Everyone who posted so far is wrong. There are hardly any "sport's cars" being produced today. The term originated with British cars that had to constantly be tinkered with, were unreliable, uncomfortable, inconvenient, etc. As in: "That chap is a bloody good sport owning a car like that". Hence sport's car, not sports car. I can think of very few cars being produced today that fit that definition. Ariel Atom maybe? Lotus perhaps? Caterham? Certainly nothing built by BMW though.

Nope everybody is not wrong. The original Cobra was built by using an early '60's British AC Ace chassis & body with a Ford small block swapped in. Thousands of continuation & reproductions are still being built today, actually way more than the original production run.

I should have been more clear. I meant the way everyone was defining 'sport's car'. And I was cranky when I posted. I still am, frankly. But the true definition has been diluted. We now have 4 door 'coupes' for f***'s sake. Why can't we just call things what they are. Like saying someone 'passed' instead of 'died'. 'Passed' what? A gas station? A mall? A Red Lobster? A chicken?

So how's that for cranky?..... 😁
