Question What if?

If you could get a 2000 M3 for the same price as an E90 which one would you go for?

E90. That's pretty expensive for a six year old car. But, I like NEW stuff.

I would be very weary of used Ms, unless you (A) know the owner really well; or (B) know the dealer/mechanic really well.

Auto trader has a bunch of 2000-2002 m3's with low mileage for pretty about the same cost as a new e90. I'm ordering my E90 325i tommorow. I was just wondering what every one here thought.

I picked E90 over M3.

There was a 2004 silver M3 with 15000 miles priced @ 42k that I was going to get. My e90 was 42k out the door. I didn't even think about getting a 4door e90 until the deal with the M3 went south. Then I test drove the E90, bought it without a second though. I loved it. Honestly though, I still feel somewhat "maybe.. just maybe I should've been more careful with my decision" whenever I see a clean e46 M3 on the road.

Honestly, if you are performance oriented, M3 will satisfy your needs.
While E90 is a SWEET car, its no where close to how M3s behave.(strictly performance wise). I still can't forget the moment when my jaws dropped after I smashed the gas pedal of the e46 m3....

The question is moot! You already picked the E90. Good choice and welcome.

Personally I really think I would choose the E90 all over again. The M3 definitely has more punch, better performance, rarer breed and more aggressive looking plus it's a coupe and I coupes. But, and this is a big but, the E90 is leaps and bounds ahead of the E46 platform, plus the fact that I can already kill myself with the amount of power from my 330, so I really don't think I will need more until I become a much better driver.

E90 is just an overall superior vehicle IMO.

I agree with Xens, the amount of power in the E90 is already awesome!

depends on what you need the car for

for my 2 car setup, the Z4 handles sports car duty, while the 325 handles the commute traffic.

If I only had one car, and didn't drive 25000 miles a year it's a no brainer to get the M3, an M3 has a special road presence that an E90 (non M) never will. We're all in a bit of honeymoon time with our car, as they're still new and aren't that many on the road, but as the roads fill with them they're quickly going to get boring (still excellent, less boring than anything else in the class, don't get me wrong)

When I only had one car, it was an M3

you've gotta love an M car

Bad Deal

I had a 2001 M3 loaded and sold it about 2 years ago for $39K. A 2000 2 years later is worth much less. Also, the reason I got rid of the M3 was that it was an unrefined car--almost everything about the E90 is better (except the power of course): the steering was numb and over-assisted, the brakes were over-assisted and non-linear, the Sports Mode was way too nervous and the regular mode way too docile, the car felt heavy (the suspension is far superior in the E90--it feels much lighter than it is), the tinny sound of the exhaust was annoying, and worst of all, the manual transmission was so notchy it was unacceptable. The E90 is much better in every category. Sure, I'd like another 78 horses, but it's a far better car otherwise.

M3 is a better car

if you enjoy driving and don't commute 8 million miles a year

if you don't enjoy driving and/or commute like it's your job
then the E90's a better choice

I'd pass! The S54 (E46 M3 engine) has had far too many major internal problems, especially early production M3s.
