Question about wheel fitment and front wider kit..?
So, the one thing i don't love to bits about my car is.. well it looks gorgeous, and i get enough people looking at it, but it's nothing you'd remember past that 15 second glance, but it doesn't stand out in the slightest, looks like any old E87 120/125 or something (I can't explain why i want this, so shhh if you don't understand either haha). In lieu of trading down to something japanese and ricing the crap out of it (lolol)... some moderately subtle but massive changes to this should please me for now :P.. it's going to take me a while to find exactly the wheels i want in exactly the colour i want (probable powdercoating..)
question being with http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/55 which claims to add 2.5 inches either side. now correct me if any of my maths is off here, but... i measured my current setup as (from wheel lip to wheel lip): 1690mm front, 1770mm rear (probably +/- a few mm either way due to my dodgy measuring), 8.5 wide +45ET front and 9.5 wide +45ET rear if it's 5 inches total on the front, this makes it ~1820mm front total width what wheel fitment fills out these guards? 10" wide, +20-25ET ?... and correct that to square it all off, the rear guards would have to come out about another inch a piece (to make up 50mm total), rear wheels 10" wide... erh.. +30-33ish offset? thanks for the assistance! |

Does that bodykit fit your hatch? I suspect you should ask them directly about the wheels and E87 compatibility. I think you should be very careful about big changes to the front offset and hence scrub radius - a 3rd question for them.
Interested in how your project pans out! |

but some local members said their E82 coupes are currently wearing E87 sideskirts (not sure why really, possibly cheap way of repairing scrapes/stone chips or something?).. and it's 100% that the front/guards fit anyway, since the front ends of 1ers are identical visually as is. so i found: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp says current wheels (225/40/18*8.5+45) have 166mm back space from hub and 225mm overall width - stock being 205mm overall and 156mm back.. so if i need them 2.5" wider overall with the same or less backspace (so no scrubbing/keep same lock etc.)... 285 wide tyres and 22 offset at 10 inches makes it almost exactly 2.5" further out (2.51), and 162mm back space. (so no chance of scrubbing, since it's got even more clearance compared to my current setup, slightly closer to stock even) (haven't worked out any other tyre widths and offsets as i haven't measured exactly what can fit in the car) Could more than likely go even further back with slightly more offset, for even wider tyres, but 285's are plenty really hah.. when i get off to some wheel places for fitment testing though, maybe even 4mm less offset will make getting coilovers and lowering easier still. will see... ED: looks like i've worked it out for myself now, anyway :P Last edited by flinchy; 02-21-2012 at 02:29 AM.. |

I got some doubts about this. It seems unusual to put wider fenders on the front than the rear. Do you think you could get the look you want with standard fenders, 10" rears and 9" fronts?

10" won't fit rear unless i go massively positive offset (59 i believe, and i'm not even sure if that's a totally great idea...). 9" won't fit front fullstop (don't want to go higher offset) current 8.5 ET45 is totally flush. it's not unusual when you want to get the same overall width front and rear... so technically it's not wider, it's perfectly in line overall. (as i said in OP, both the rear width and front width will almost exactly be 1820mm) someone on these forums (can't remember which user has it) just check the ribs 'n' rumps thread for pictures of an AW 135i that looks significantly wider than a 1m... actually.. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6...c0b6f545_b.jpg not the best pic... there are others. heck, just check out the link in my first post of the kit, heaps of different angles without even widening the rear and it looks awesome. http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/55 - for the kit (linked in OP too) http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=584662 for a widebody twin turbo E87, that as far as i can tell, about as wide as i want it, though i'm not sure on the rear, he has weird wheel sizes, too high offset for how pumped his guards look. (page 5 he gets 10" wide +39ET (rear, i believe) which is REALLY high from my maths) and the front of the side skirts don't flare out enough to match the guards (not as perfectly as the evolution kit)... the rear of the skirts are pretty perfect though. and i don't want my rear THAT pumped overall, a little more subtle, just enough to fit in the wheels, not totally make the ass puffed. be similar though. If you want to get rid of understeer, perhaps it isn't necessary to put massively wide front tyres. Have you tried adding negative front camber, possibly using camber plates? That would also give you more space for wider front rubber. |

wow.. that looks absolutely amazing, with an amazing engine to match.. definitely unique, looks relatively OEM too.. i like the 1M bumper on it too, the extra duct cuts into that expanse, rather than just more plastic. btw you can buy the M3 control arm/bushing/fsb set from sverma to control your understeer i believe. edit: lol also seems like a nice 135i front cut can be had for ~15k on ebay at the moment.. hehe a 135i E87 is calling :P Last edited by quasio; 02-21-2012 at 07:39 AM.. |

i didn't say the styling wasn't PART of the desire :P. i could currently fit 245 to match the rear, but the rears are super stretched on at the moment >_<. also don't want the uneven wear from larger camber numbers. Quote:

i have the ER widebody on my 135i coupe. I have 9.5 all around (et 60 rear, et 30 front). The car drives amazingly. You can really feel the difference with the wider front rubber. I have no idea how well the kit would fir a E87 but would love to see someone try. if e82 sideskirts fit on an e87, i dont see why the kit wouldnt fit.
the 9.5's fit very well and i dont suggest you go 10" on a street car although it is possible. |

If you matched the front to the rear like on that E87 it would not look so bad. But a widebody front with OEM rear on an E87 would look odd I think.

Looking at pics of the widebody mods, I just don't think its an improvement on the lines of the 1 series. I believe you can fit 245/265 staggered tires with only minor mods to the fenders and alignment close to factory specs. That's just my opinion, so feel free to go ahead if you are still keen.

i do personally love the wider look probably be the only E87 like it in the whole of australia (and very rare throughout the world even), so definitely keen Quote:
thanks for the pics, makes me want it even more since i have a black car (and will be getting CF spoiler/diffuser too, as well as maybe interior bits) will leave bare cleared cf i think though, unless i run into legality issues >_> haha thanks!. it does make our stock cars look teeny tiny (it even dwarfs the 1m!), when in reality.. well.. they're not exactly narrow :/ |

the 1m OEM front end would cost SO MUCH more than the cf kit though >_< Last edited by flinchy; 02-23-2012 at 07:47 PM.. |
