How good is the standard professional radio on the E90?
How good is the standard professional radio on the E90? I originally ordered the Hi-Fi system and the dealer forgot to add it, so my car is built (A black sapphire 320d with sports pack, lemon interior, PDC front and rear and a sunroof) and it will have the standard professional radio (No idrive) with six speakers.
Now i can cancel my order and get the to give me the hi-fi system in another car, but my deleivery date of 9 May will be moved to End July. How good is this system? How does it compare to the standard E46 system which i currently have? Thanks for your feedback Stephen |

Yeah, I guess it really comes down to whether you're an audiophile or not. That's too bad they messed up the order and you'd have to wait until July. I would hope they'd give you a pretty darn good discount if you re-order it for July. Anyway, if you stick with the stereo you have now, the standard one, one option you have over the IDrive is the MP3 capabilities. You can't play MP3s with the IDrive (unless you get the CD changer, a $500+ accessory), but you can with the factory radio. As far as the Logic 7 though, that's up to you. Personally, I couldn't do with out it. Good luck, though whatever you decide.

Iīve test driven the E90 with the Professional radio and the standard audio system. It sucks. The Logic 7 is great but the standard system is lousy. And itīs not easy to upgrade the system with the stock radio (no pre-amp-out)
Reorder and go for the Logic7. Itīs well worth the additional waiting time |

Photo of Hi-fi speaker (front)
I went for the Hi-fi system upgrade and am pleased with the sound. The speakers are upgraded in the rear shelf to include tweeters and in the front you get an additional tweeter over standard system (shown) and an upgraded mid range speaker.
The amp is in the boot under the cd-changer. |

BMW 3 series stereo
I hope its better than the Harmon Kardon upgrade in my 330. It is the worst $700 I've ever spent in my life. The actual stereo is great, but the speaker rattle is annoying and passengers are constantly commenting about it. I know there are service bulletins, etc... about this, but I've been in so many friggen times to have this "fixed" that now I just live with it.

I have the standard stereo (sat radio, mp3/cd player)- the sound is alright.. On my 02 jetta i had installed a great stereo so im a bit bummed that i dont have that kind of sound on my bmw. Im sure you can enhance it, maybe better speakers?? Anyway- its not the best but its not unbearable.

The bass is ok, but the mids and highs are very weak. Thus making the sound somewhat muddy. Playing with the treble/bass controls only changes the curve at the extremeties (high highs and low lows) but the midrange is only lightly affected. And upper -midrange is where your vocals usually stand. In addition, the AC noise is in the mids, so having your AC on high fan speed will greatly deteriorate your sound..... this was my experience with MP3 and Radio, I'll have to try a CD before a final judgement. I am more about clarity and pronounciation of the different frequencies that I am into "loudness", "energy" and "subs"
I am actually into sound production (I operate a home studio as a hobby), and was really hoping that the stock radio would have a somewhat flat frequency response so I can demo my tracks in the car. But i guess i cant do dat anymore . I loved the stock radio on the Toyota solara ( i had it as a rental while i was getting my e90). It made all my tracks sound platinum It sounded like there was some sort of dynamic range compression, this made the sound more "in your face" . Someone said that it shares the same radio/ parts as of the lexus ...maybe thats why. But again, the stock e90 is still great. I am just really picky. |

This is probably one of the most subjective subjects, next to colors. If you really really are an audiophile then you'd probably want the Logic7. I love good music in my car, and spend 2+ hrs a day commuting. I have the standard system and it sounds fine. Bottom line: it's up to you. Best of luck either way, and ENJOY.

The stock radio was probably the biggest disappointment in this car. With all the speakers I expected more robust sound, not the rattling I get when I turn up the volume. I haven't removed any covers to see what type of speakers are really in there, but think that would be my first step in upgrading. Since it's the wife's every day, I just deal with it. Skimo has the description down. While I like some volume, clarity is also my first choice. The only CDs I've heard in it were a Spanish opera singer, so at the lower volume it demanded it sounded OK.

While not "audiophile" quality, the stock system is decent. By that I mean comparable to that of my (old) Acura and Audi. Audiophiles would be well advised to upgrade, however.
For the rest of us, its acceptable. |

I listened to the Logic 7 system in a 330i recently at the dealer(The radio came on without the key! ) and I wasn't impressed. It sounded good, but the true test for me will be with the car in motion with road noise to overcome and my favorite music turned up a little. I should add, however, that my current car as an aftermarket system by Alpine so it's unfair to compare apples to oranges.

I personally prefer the Logic 7 in my 330, but there was definitely some advancement in the standard radio department. Last edited by RichReg; 07-06-2005 at 02:35 PM.. |

I have the "Professional" stereo. It sounds good with good quality CD's
but JVC system in may last car (Toyota Avalon) was better clarity and response in mid-range and tweeters. Bass is a bit better in the BMW with the two subs under the seats. I didn't think the logic7 was actually worth the $1,000+ price. Does anyone know who actually manufactures the stereo and speakers for the "Professional" model sound system? |
