Magnesium Steering Wheel Rim
I was just watching a video of an interview with Matt Russell, the M brand manager for BMW NA, that was done during the 1M launch at Willow Springs and he said that the car has a magnesium steering wheel rim. This is the first time I've heard that fact. Anyone else heard this elsewhere? Why do you thing they decided to use magnesium in the steering wheel? I didn't know weight was an issue for that part?

Seriously, I think none of it is true. Just doesn't fit...of course unless they borrowed it from another model directly

Only one way to find out.
Cut your steering wheel, light up a match and burn the steering wheel metal, drop a bit of water, if it explodes, it's pure magnesium |

To show you, through the smoke, which way not to exit when the car is on fire.

"Magnesium In Steering Column
Fire fighters arrive on a scene in Los Angeles to put out a car that is on fire. The fire fighter sprays down the inside of the vehicle and as he cools the magnesium in the steering column it causes an explosion. Doesn’t seem to phase the fire fighter though, he just moves to the rear of the vehicle and continues spraying the car down." Also:

I heard that before, that is why the performance steering (electronic or not) are not //M aproved parts.
