I love both cars, and either one is a win in my books! Now that the 1M is gone make sure you supercharge that V8!

M-DCT takes some thorough understanding and getting used to to get maximum benefits, which the handbook doesn't explain well enough. I honestly think the combination of M-DCT and S65 makes the M3 special. Had the M3 come only in manual - which I feel is a handicap and doesn't match the characteristics of the S65 - I would have bought the 1M instead.

M-DCT can be just an involving as a manual but in a different way - I find myself constantly adjusting the drivelogic setting to suit the road conditions, the way I'm driving and whether I want to snap the necks of my passengers . My favourite feature is the one-pull-downshift-overtake manoeuvre, much like pulling the trigger of a gun.
Thanks for the info and offer Marcus. Would be a shame to change 1M before taking it to Wales but that's the situation I'm in at the moment. Got a bit of wear left in the rears but may need to change them before Wales (or maybe that should be "especially for going to Wales!" )

Can't believe I have had 17k miles out of the tyres!

17k miles from the rears is excellent. Yes, should definitely keep the 1M for Wales at least. In my opinion, you would have to replace the rears either way, as you could use that as leverage or that the dealer might use the worn tyres against you. I would personally replace it with another pair of BMW starred PS2s to match the fronts, and camskill is selling them for £240 per tyre, which is about the cheapest you can find.

Are you planning on supercharging the M3?

You have to enjoy what each car is strong in.-

1M-you enjoy the low end torque, the small size

m3-you enjoy 7k-8400 rpms, enjoy the technological marlvel of DCT shifts and blips, enjoy the sound of the s65 and exhaust and enjoy the fact its a one-off engine for one car only-the specialness factor.

Ideally I would love to have both of these in my garage-would make a great combo.

Its just really hard for 1M owners to realize if you are in the wrong gear by even 1 gear, the power is gone. Its tough to get used to going 80mph and shifting to 3rd to blast into the peak powerband. A 1m would think that is craziness. But if you don't do that and take that into account, you really are wasting the time in the m3 as you will not be using any of its 414 HP in its prime powerband
Same here. Theres an amazing modified, full cage M3 by me with AA Super Charger and some crazy exhaust and the tone (dare I say) blows the exotics doors off!! (IMO ) A Truly amazing powerplant

Spot on. The M3's gearing has to be actively shifted in order to exploit the HPs, that's why the DCT is so involving for a clutchless system. You still have to row through the gears to maximize acceleration. You can't be lazy. Conversely, the 1Ms enormous torque allows you greater flexibility and margin for error. Just step on the gas and go!

This. The M3 requires one to work to get the maximum out of it. Travelling at 80ish mph and then instantly dropping to 3rd gear with DCT and seeing the rev counter go to 7000rpm with 1400rpm to go, is quite an experience. I do like the brute force of the 1M's torque build-up though. Dear BMW M, make a turbocharged 8400rpm engine please. Oh, and make sure it has a CO2 emission of less than 224g/km and achieves >35mpg.

Isn't that the brief for the new M3?

Don't think it'll be a high rpm engine though. Well, it'll be high for a turbocharged engine but certainly not 8400rpm. I do hope however it'll achieve more than 35mpg on the combined cycle and is within a lower CO2 tax band. Looking to replace mine when the LCI M4 performance pack version comes up in 4-5 years time. Incidentally, Joe is managing to achieve high 30's now on his motorway journeys.

High 30's, that's impressive. I'm not sure I like the direction of M cars of the future. I'm liking the 997 gt3 as a possible 1M replacement!

I think the future of all high performance cars will be forced induction or hybrids unfortunately, but it's fine by me, given that you can drive harder and longer for whilst using less fuel. The Gen. II GT3 RS 3.8 is certainly tempting for me too. Will see how prices go in a couple of years time.

The m3 doesn't even get out of bed before 6k and than is up and ready at 7k and only continues to pull harder and harder until 8400. Thats the thing its an experience in itself. Some hate it and like low end grunt and some love it. I love both
+1!!!

Why I will never get rid of my 1M and a few years down the road when I'm on my own my goal is to have both in the garage!

Great points by all!
Love my 1M. Would be awesome to put an e90m3 sedan in the garage alongside someday as a daily driver.

Fortunately, the sedans are getting cheaper....should be able to find one for around 20k in a couple of years....

That is the problem with the M3, 95% of the average drive time is spent below 'the best part'

Unfortunately, you either like it or you don't. You could also say that one does not need the best part 95% of the time i.e. for regular driving. It's not as though the car can't move when it's anything below 7k. One can be in the right gear at a low rpm and it's still on boil.

+1--almost exactly the main reason I prefer the 1M (I also like the fact that it is exclusive without being snobby!)

The E92 M3 with the Comp is a beast, I've driven my friends and I'd gladly trade in my FBO E85 tuned 135i in a heartbeat. I'll pull on him all day, but even with coilovers I'm no where near close to handling as the Comp M3. I'd have to dump $3-4K to get handling close to the 1M let alone the Comp M3. Get a SC kit for that badass S65 and call it a day.

The buyer used JP Logistics. They have closed container transport that regularly ships FL to CA. Shipping was under $1800 and took about 6-7 days.

For me, it was just market timing and a need to move on. I don't like to get attached to posessions, especially cars due to my obsessive personality. And, the 1M was really too dear to risk as a DD. I had it, enjoyed it, and left it in great hands in a great home and playground. My 1M will be missed. Do I regret getting the M3? No. Not for a second. They say a pistonhead has to own at some point in time certain cars. For me, those are a 997, the 1M, an M3, an Aston, a 1950's Jag XK, and....that's the adventure.
