130i brake upgrade

Hi ladies,

I'm keen to upgrade the brakes on my 130i as the new 18" wheels I put on highlight the visual inadequacy of the stock ones.

There have been conflicting reports of the difficulty of replacing the stock brakes with the ones from the 135i. I understand the fronts are simple, bolt on, but the rears may require some adjustment?

Would like to hear from anyone who's done this. I know I'm not the first to think about it, hopefully there's someone out there with first-hand knowledge!

Cheers.

Nick.

The front is plug and play, the rear will need a hub for each side to use 135i brakes or thr full 135i BMP BBK. User Flinchy mentioned it recently.

Hi Nasperated,
I have done 135i up grade on my 130i, I purchased brakes from Turner Motorsport in the US both front and rear for 135i. You need to change rear drive flanges to 135 items and you will need to replace wheel bearings when you do this, you will get the increased rear track like the coupe I purchased these bits from Pelican Parts in the US for approx half what you pay here.
I did this upgrade about 13 months ago and have been very happy with the outcome. My 130i is a 02/06 build and everything work out fine, some information indicates you can not fit BBK to cars built prior to 06/06.
Cheers Cameron

Thanks guys, really appreciate the advice. Yes that was probably me in Crows Nest, I don't live far from there.

I'll have a browse of those websites in the US, that's a good idea.

Hi Cameron

just tried to PM you but couldn't

I'm looking to do the same thing at the moment and was wondering if you still have the part #'s for the rear drive flange, wheel bearings and any other extra items that are required.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Sorry i have not been on the site for a while.
I do have the part numbers some where which I will post later or if you go online to BMW Fans or the like you can look them up.
You will need the 135 drive flange and rear wheel bearings the rest is the labour for fitting
The fronts are pretty straight forward with just a bit of trimming of the backing plate required.
It is a bit of work to fit the rears but worth the effort Cheers Cameron

Thanks - I've looked up the parts. With the bearings it looks like a few hundred $$$ + the brakes.

My Brother used to be a mechanic, so the only issue i will have is borrowing the use of a press from someone.

Now i just need to try and find some good condition 2nd hand callipers.

Hi Jeff,
Just to confirm Wheel bearing part number 33416762321 and Drive flange 33416771082 I sourced these parts from Pelican Parts in the US for about half the price that they are here and that included shipping costs I purchased that brakes from Turner Motorsport again from the US hope this is helpful.
What part of Sydney are you in? I am in the Northern/Hills district I am happy for you to view my car if you are interested Happy Motoring Cameron

Hi all,

Only a 120i, but as the rotors and pads are all up for replacement, I was thinking of a mild upgrade to 130i spec. I guess they are a bit better and bolt straight on..?
I don't actually need anything bigger really, and definitely don't want anything that requires bigger rims than the 17" originals.

Anybody have their old 130i bits left over ?

P.S. in Sydney

Not sure if this will help but this is what I got in my BMWP brake kit front and rear (when it used to be available) for my previous 130i Feb 07 build (one of last of pre LCI)

They are near enough the same brakes as the 135i but with different front discs which are grooved and drilled. I also hear the discs have an aluminium bell.

I test drove a 135i recently and the brakes have much better progressive feel compared to the ones on my 130i and this influenced me to changed mine.

PS Minimum size wheel is 17" for these brakes.

Here are some pics of what you get in the kit

there is also a little bag of bits like bolts etc. forgot to put it in the picture ops:
