Hibernation mode 135i

Hope this helps someone one day.

My car sometimes goes a week without starting. Last time I did this it did not start - got nothing when I hit the button. Tried to jump it from my wife's car zip.

Rang BMW assist and waited an hour - he checked the battery 12+ volts hmmm (wish I had thought of that)
He grinned and said put the key in and wait 30 secs as the computers progressively shut down the longer you leave it.

So hope that saves someone a call to Roadside assist - just put the key in - push for ignition and leave for 30 secs and voila.

Has happened a few times now so I know it works

Yep all the BMs do it, but aparently they only eneter hiberation if the car is locked.... so if you leave it in the garage unlocked it wont go into hiberation. Can lead to battery degredation.

Can someone please explain what this hibernation mode does?

So basically you turn the ignition on, wait 30 seconds then start it?

Interesting, I've left my car locked in the garage for over a month and many times for over a week and it's started straight away.

Except that time the fuel pump died, but that was less than 12 hours :P

I put the car on a battery tender if not going to be driven for a few days. AFAIK this will maintain and prolong the life of the battery as well.

Is this hibernation thing mentioned in the car user manual?
