6000k HID bulb pics

Here are some photos after I have installed the 6000k HID main beam bulbs as well as 8500k bulbs for the angel eyes. The HIDs are direct Philips replacements of the stock bulbs which I believe are 4200k - paid about $130 for the pair. I don't have a comparison pic between the 4200k and 6000k - but the photos do a pretty good job of showing the slightly blueish (but not too blue in my opinion) change from stock.

It's a completely cosmetic mod (actually the 6000k bulbs put out slightly less lumens) but a detail that I'm a bit particular about. Also, the 8500k angle eyes bulbs actually come close to matching the 6000k HIDs.

No - they are the main lights on low beams - I took it from a higher angle so that there is less glare. Here are two that I just took of only the angel eyes as well as the high beams against a dark cinder-block wall.

Robert-

It is the Philips 6000k HID D1s bulb. If you do a Google search on that you will find many vendors - also there are some cheaper offerings on Ebay of the same hardware - but different brands.

Yes - the stock angels are H8 halogen bulbs. I replaced them with the GP Thunder "8500k" halogens as many others have done on this forum. The main beams are the change from stock HIDs to 6000k HIDs.

What you see here is the combination of both changes -

Hmm, pretty cool. They look great. Nice photography too. A lot of people shoot this and don't get the white balance correct.

I wonder if you could replace the angel eye bulbs with LEDs. The "superwhite" LEDs are usually a pretty high Kelvin rating, and they last forever.

Thanks - I used my Sony DSCW55 on the ISO low light setting. The LED idea is a good suggestion. I saw someone else post a link to some H8 LED bulbs on ebay - they looked like a very good match and may be brighter than the Thunder GP or equivalent halogen bulbs.

The only concern with changing Halo bulbs to LED's are the load factor. LED's draw less power, so most cars think the bulb is burned out and you get a dash warning. The LED H8's on ebay look very nice, and I am hoping they contain a load resistor.

Hmm, BMW warns you if a bulb is out? That's cool. But you're right. If you get a warning like that, a simple resistor on the circuit will eliminate it. Superlumination.com is the site I used for all of my LED replacements on my WRX. I replaced all of the exterior lights except the fogs and low and high beams with LEDs and just installed resistors on the front and rear turn signals. Takes a few minutes. No problems 3 years later except with the license plate bulbs burning out. But I think that's a problem my WRX was born with because it happens with regular incandescents as well. The site sells resistors as well.

Looks very good.

Just curious--was this an easy mod? It was really easy on the E92--hoping it will be the same on the E82.

This literally took 10 minutes on my E92.....about how long for your 135?

It's actually easier to install the HIDs than it is to replace the angel eyes H8 bulbs. On the HIDs, you simply rotate the plastic collar that holds the HID unit in its place, unplug the metal-braided power line - then reverse that process with the new bulb (after removing the same pesky plastic headlight housing covers of course). If you sell the stock HIDs on Ebay - this mod is almost free!

Hey John! How was ED?! When does your 135i rubber meet the Denver road?

Yep, go the condensation out - actually, Murray replaced my whole headlight housing for me under warranty. It appears as though the steel-braided power plug going into the back of the HID pod was being pinched in the bulb housing cover - so problem solved thankfully.
