Deposit to order a car

I'm about ready to order my 330 and I sent a list of the options I would like to the dealer. I asked him what I would need to bring for a deposit and he said $5,000! I intend to lease the car and put $2,000 down. Has anyone been requested to leave such a large deposit? I've seen $500 and $1,000 mentioned by people but not $5,000.

it does seem excessive. Anywhere between 1-2 k would be reasonable IMHO.

That's kinda much for a deposit.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I replied back to the salesman that I would happily leave the $2,000 I plan to put down on the lease as the deposit. If he won't accept that there are two other BMW dealers in the city here.

It doesn't make sense. Most dealers ask for $500 or $1000 for a deposit. If you write them a check, most of them don't even deposit your check.

Geeez what dealer is this? $5K for a deposit??

Even $2K is too much, this is not a good sign. I'd bail on this dealership fast.

mine asked for 1,000. I gave my VISA. They never charge it ...
I don't like the 5,000 story.

i left 500 bucks.. and i ordered a "weird" car...
leatherette, with a whole bunch of options...
so IF i backed out, it probably would have been harder for them to get rid of.

$5k? Screw that! I'd find another dealer. $1000 seems to be the norm. In the past when I have ordered a new BMW I have only given $500.00

I went to the dealership this past weekend to finally order my car. We go through all of the formalities and evetually get to the price. I have a ton of options and even added the alarm, tinting, and having them chrome the sport wheels. The total came to over $53,000 (I told you I added a lot of options). I then offer $49,000 and the salesman tries to tell me that they don't negotiate on custom-order cars. It was getting close to dinner time so I said that I had to leave because I was getting hungry and I'm sure my wife was wondering where I was. Suddenly he got the urge to go talk to the Sales Manager about their policy of not negotiating on custom-order cars. I really was hungry and told him just to e-mail me his offer. He later countered with $51,8xx. We're still going back and forth.

Yes the specs please. Hmmm for $51K you should probably think about getting a 5-series instead.
