No order, no deposit. Drove him home in December 2011. No snow but very cold and scary (fun) ride on four hockey puck tires. -10 degrees C is not ideal with the stock Michelins and an itch to put down a little power;-)
I owe my good fortune to a BMW dealership owner that ordered the car for his son and was talked out of giving it to him. Something about "too much car":-) To bad about your luck son:-)
11,500 Km and about 200,000 more to go!

No order, no deposit as well. May of 2011 I was in a BSM(wanted white) e92 335 6MT with a jb4 and dci, car was good fun but when I'd bought it i'd wanted a 135i, my gf at the time spoke so much of how the 135 was a very feminine car that I finally gave in and shopped for a manual 335. It was a great car but I was coming from a turbo'ed and slammed z3, so the 335 was huge to me.

At that time I needed new tires, I started looking for something to add grip because I was just shredding the 255's, I then realized 255 was as big as you could go on the stock wheels, so then I was looking at wheels. Coming from the z3 I knew this was a slippery slope(the only thing stock was most body panels and the inside rear view mirror).. I eventually settled on ordering rs3's in stock sizing and hoping it would be enough to put down the JB4 power.. while they were being shipped I saw my first 1M on the road. Game over.. It had everything I wanted in a car, a turbo'ed 6, RWD, a LSD, huge wheels, wheel wells that would hold anything I wanted and most importantly it was a smaller form factor that my gf couldn't spend her time making condescending gestures of my immaturity(while maybe she still could) and the cars lack of masculinity. I was sold.

That day I sent an email to all the BMW sales guys I or family members had bought cars from in the past, I'm always involved in their purchases, asking that they let me know if they somehow had one available.. All I got back were ridiculously snarky emails from salesman "Yea right, good luck" "lol, little late on that one", the most serious response: "I'll let you know if someone backs out, but not likely". My tires showed up, I depressingly was set to go get them installed that same day, hopes slashed, reassuring myself that it was a better financial decision to stay in the 335, boy that was wrong. That salesman with a decent response calls me up extremely excited, "I have one in our sister dealership a few hours away that someone just backed out of, lets make this happen!" I spent the next two days hammering them on my trade in and the 1M's price, drove up and picked it up, they asked if I wanted a test drive, "no thank you, just get me something to sign and the keys please," i already knew what i needed to without touching the car, that drive home was the happiest hour of my life I think!

Sent the tires I'd ordered back, and never looked back, amazing that the car is worth somewhere near what I payed and I can't think of selling it, it's a perfect car in my book, I'd love a bit better aerodynamics but who the hell cares when your behind the wheel with gobs of power.. thank you to the engineers for making the car I was waiting for

Dropped it off for the 30k service today, wish I could keep the miles off, but I just want to drive it.

Ordered...can't remember maybe June 2011?
Deposit sometime in early 2011. $500, refundable.
6500 mi. on the clock.
Hopefully never have to get rid of it! Now if I can just scrimp some change for an E9, a nice E21, an old E30 to round it out...but for now the DD is my 128i 'vert.

VO, almost 2 yrs old now. 7500 miles. Want to keep but 991 50th anniversary arriving in Nov. Try and squeeze them both in somewhere. 1m is a great all round car. Performance vs cost is better than anything else, especially anything vaguely new.

After an allocation from another dealer fell through, I found my AW 1M at a dealership in Nashville (thanks to some help from fellow forum members). I have around 12,000 miles and love the car. I almost traded the 1M toward an Aston Martin V8 Vantage this Spring , but my wife (who has never driven the BMW) would not let me get rid of it. So now I have both cars.

I was initially tempted by a BMW sales guy in January 2011, before the first 1Ms arrived in Peru, I think the first one arrived in March 2011. I backed out because I hadn't seen one in person and didn't go for it. After driving a 135i a few months earlier I knew I would absolutely love the 1M, but at that moment I let it go.
Then in early July, the salesman called me and told me that they had a Valencia Orange 1M to test drive. We went out for a joyride and I felt chills going up and down my spine and I knew I WAS going to own one of these! But I didn't buy one there either.
A couple of weeks later on July 21st 2011 a friend of mine called and asked me to give him a ride to the BMW store because he wanted to get a 318i, so I picked him up and went along with him to the store. While my friend was finalizing his order, I sat down with the guy I had tested the 1M with a couple of weeks before and he told me there was a BSM 1M coming in in August which was not taken. So I did what my gut told me and I placed a $10K deposit on my baby! And thats that, my 1M was delivered by the end of August and its still going strong! 15,000kms so far!!!
And of course, I am NEVER getting rid of my 1M, EVER!
Cheers!

What about a 1M gathering in Colorado in 2014? Or Pacific North West States?

Some place we can do a drive as well as meet and be social.

I don't mind doing all the planning if owners are actually interested in doing it. We could get some magazine coverage on the event as well.

Thoughts?

I can look into transport options for those who want to do it but are not drivers.

No deposit, just waiting list (got the only one my dealership received) before was even official and picked up in Munich day before Oktoberfest started, Sept. 2011. Autobahn, Nurburgring Nordshliefe (at modest speed on green engine) and Trier! 10,000 miles, VO, never sell. Would definitely go to "meet" in CO, doubt Pacific NW.
