Last time I saw an N54 car in with that same exact ticking noise, it also had an injector stick open.. Which led to a slightly bent rod, causing all the problems. Happens somewhat regularly on the N63 motors. Just a thought..

Whoa a stuck open injector bent the con rod? Did it dump enough to hydrolock it or something? That is intense…have seen numerous injector flow issues but never a seriously damaging outcome as a result. Usually just creates trim issues in that bank and serious rich conditions.

Mine hydrolocked....stopped it solid and woildnt turn over again until all plugs were removed. I dumped a full cup of fuel out of the charge pipe when i was swapping back to the stock unit.

What can i tell my dealer to look for? They seem to be oblivious to the sound...car also doesn't feel as smooth as it use to.

Thanks

Not sure what to tell you man.. tell your dealer to learn to diagnose a car! Haha. I mean pretty much all they can do is either pull the head to check piston height or drop the pan and inspect the rods..

Just to clarify, is it still ticking after completely warmed up?

EDIT: Here's a much larger thread with n54 335's exhibiting what seems to be the same thing, give it a read Red.

I can here some sort of solenoid clicking in cold weather at <1100rpm or so. It comes and goes, though. It is lessened when the car is warmed up, but only goes completely away in warm weather.

The click does not change speed with RPM and starts and stops very abruptly, so I think it is just something like a crank case vent solenoid, or maybe a solenoid for the vacuum system for boost control.

Yeah it still ticks when warm...i have to really get it hot (oil temps in the 250 range) before tick goes away. Once cooled down below say 240 oil temp comes right back.

No link was attached :-(

Mine is below 1100 and again @ 2200 but its hard to hear at that rpm. Also as the engine speeds up from idle to 1100 it goes faster, so i venture to say we have a different tick
