Paddle shifter, Will it fit?

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has a e39 540i 2000, the question is does an e9x/e8x m steering with paddle shifter fits into that car?

I've been looking for infomation everywhere, So I thought I try here.

Please Advise?

Thanks

Im pretty sure it wont. The steering wheel design is completely different (size, diameter etc), and I don't think they even have paddle-shift for the e39?

Even if it does fit...what about wiring/coding? and getting to work. Not worth going through the trouble.

If the E39 had the 'tiptronic' function then it can work.

It's not plug and play but it can work with some modification. Things you will need to modify to get the steering wheel to fit:

- line up pins on the clockspring
- blinker return pin

Then to get the paddles to work you will need:

- a new updated clock spring, pin connectors and pins (p/n# 61318379091, 61136925634 & 61130005197)

You can then tap generic wire into the transmission upshift/downshift that the tiptronic uses to go back to the paddles, so the car effectively thinks you're using the gearlever's tiptronic function.

Yes it has a tiptronic on it. So you r definately sure that the e9x m sport steering wheel will fit onto his car?

Anything is possible with enough work, so yes if you look into it hard enough it's definitely possible.
As for the MF buttons, not so sure.
